Thread: Hot-shooting Ragin' Cajuns cruise

  1. Default Hot-shooting Ragin' Cajuns cruise

The rims there are tighter than at UL's usual practice court, the shooting backdrop decidedly different.

Yet the Cajuns came out Tuesday night firing away as if they'd spent all semester living in the building, hitting 14-of-18 from 3-point range in the first half alone of a 92-72 exhibition win...

Hot shooting Cajuns did not do very well in the second half on either end of the floor. We can take comfort in that Marlin is a defensive minded coach who "claims" to love this bunch. So they should be able to be molded into what he wants without deciding to leave after one season.

One of the reasons the defense was poorer in the 2nd half was because Payton and Long barely played in the 2nd half. Still, the lack of focus in the 2nd half was disappointing. Of course some of that is because everyone available played quite a bit. Moss is not athletic enough or strong enough yet to be effective on the defensive end down low. We knew lack of inside depth would be a concern and last night only proved that to be the case. My understanding is that Cornell Barnett did not play because of a concussion. He is a 6'7" freshman forward from New Orleans who is athletic but raw defensively. I hope he is available on Sunday. For us to have a chance, Long will have to play at least 35 minutes.

i agree with all of what you said, watching last night when shawn long isnt in the game, we arent nearly the same team. I have never seen Cornell Barnett play, so i dont know if he is inside guy. Even with all the shooters we have, we need to have more than one low post scorer. Matt Moss is a perimeter player.
Also, i sure hope Josh Soto will be cleared to play. He gives us yet another scorer, and the limited i did see of him previously(not at UL) he seems like he could shoot the 3 and attack the rim

Have a feeling it's gonna be a long year. We will get absolutely destroyed on the boards.

Payton only had 2 points. I thought he was our returning stud player. Did he not play much?

He did score last year, but all of his points from a year ago came from driving the lane.

Last night, he passed alot. Have a feeling that was the game plan though to get the guys all on the same page. I was hoping to see him take some jump shots, but that didnt happen.

He played limited minutes. But also, as a PG if your teammates are shooting 70% from the three, you should keep passing.

But, on the contrary, we will shoot threes better, shoot free throws better, create more turnovers with the press and turn it over less than we did last year.

I think our season will actually depend a lot on our 3p%. Upper 30's close or low 40's we have a chance to win a couple.

Beneath 35%. I think we will struggle.

This team will be fun to watch, we need to do a better job of attendance though. With our three point ability and AMT dunking on a whole lot of people alond with Long dominating many teams I think we will have a decent season. My expectations were low but after being at the game last night there is some hope.

Payton only played 20 minutes last night and only took three shots. The one he made was a 10 footer from the baseline. Coach Marlin said in the post game report on Ragincajuns.com that he purposely played at a slower pace in the 2nd half in order to work on some things. Probably a good move as they do have some work to do in the half court offense.
