  2. UL Baseball Road games hold key for Ragin' Cajuns

UL holds a one-game lead in the Sun Belt Conference baseball standings and controls its own destiny, but the two teams nipping closest at its heels have yet to be faced.

And the Ragin' Cajuns have to travel to face both UL Monroe and New Orleans, who are in a virtual tie for second place in the league standings with four weekends to go in the race.

UL hosts Arkansas State this weekend in a three-game series and wraps up its home schedule with three games against Arkansas-Little Rock. ASU and UALR are ninth and 11th in the league race, and on the outside looking in with the league's top eight clubs advancing to the conference tournament May 23-26 in Mobile, Ala.

It's the two road series that look bigger for the Cajuns. UL, 13-5 in league play, is at ULM (13-7) to open May and wraps up its regular season at UNO (12-6).

  3. UL Baseball Ragin' Cajuns back on road to face Lamar

There's a good chance that UL's baseball team will be travel-weary tonight when the Ragin' Cajuns take on a long-time rival.

The Cajuns (29-12) have played seven of their last eight games on the road, which is where they'll be again at 6:30 p.m. when they face Lamar's Card-inals (27-16) at Vincent-Beck Stadium in Beaumont, Texas.

UL is coming off three losses at sixth-ranked Arizona State over the weekend, and the Cajuns didn't arrive back in Lafayette from Tempe, Ariz., until after 7 p.m. Monday. That gave precious little time to prepare for Lamar, which has beaten the Cajuns three straight times at Vincent-Beck.

"Tuesday won't be easy," said Cajun coach Tony Robichaux, "but it'll be good for us. It'll help toughen us up a little more. We're in some tough times right now, but it's like they say, tough times don't last, but tough people do."

  4. UL Baseball Opponents view: Lamar falls to UL 3-1

BEAUMONT - After taking two of three from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Southland Conference action over the weekend, Lamar University steps out of conference Tuesday for its final mid-week baseball game of the season against long-time rival Louisiana-Lafayette. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

Lamar is 27-16 overall and 14-4 in SLC play. The Cardinals are 19-8 at home this season. UL-Lafayette is 29-12 overall and 13-5 in Sun Belt Conference play. The Ragin Cajuns were swept in a three-game series at No. 9-ranked Arizona State over the weekend. Lamar holds a 70-60 all-time series advantage.

The Ragin Cajuns won the earlier meeting with the Cardinals, 5-4, on April 3 in Lafayette, scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Erik Kanaby went 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Jeff Vickers went 1-for-4 with a solo home run for the Cardinals. Lamar has won the last three meetings against the Ragin Cajuns in Beaumont.

Justin Walker, a sophomore from Nederland, is expected to make his second start of the season for the Cardinals. He is 0-2 with a 6.19 earned run average with 16 strikeouts and 12 walks in 16.0 innings pitched.

Default Re: Road games hold key for Ragin' Cajuns

I think we will have at least a three game lead going into the NO and Monroe trips I think we sweep both of the Arkansas series while NO and Monroe will lose at least 2 during that time. I think we win this thing going away.

  6. UL Baseball CajunBlog: Road wins starting to become more important

UL’s baseball team has struggled away from home in recent weeks, and that’s a trend the Ragin’ Cajuns need to reverse in a hurry . maybe as soon as Tuesday night.

The Cajuns head west to take on Lamar’s Cardinals in Beaumont Tuesday. It’s the next-to-last non-conference game of the season, and it’s key for UL to amp it up on the road for a lot of reasons.

  7. UL Baseball Solich, Harmon handle Lamar 3-1

With UL's baseball team playing its eighth road game in nine outings, and having arrived back from a trip to Arizona less than 24 hours earlier, Ragin' Cajun coach Tony Robichaux needed a short game and needed his pitchers to throw strikes Tuesday evening.

He got both from Brent Solich and Gregory Harmon, and because of that the Cajuns got a rare victory in Beaumont, Texas.

Solich scattered five hits and didn't allow an earned run through seven innings, and Harmon shut the door on Lamar's Cardinals over the final two frames as UL grabbed a 3-1 victory to snap a three-game loss streak.

The win also broke a three-game losing streak for the Cajuns (30-12) at Lamar's Vincent-Beck Stadium, and gave UL a sweep of the Cardinals (27-17) this season.

  8. UL Baseball Lamar Falls at Home to Louisiana-Lafayette, 3-1

BEAUMONT - Senior Erik Kanaby went 3-for-5 at the plate, but Lamar University could only muster a single run in losing to Louisiana-Lafayette 3-1 in non-conference baseball action Tuesday night at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

Lamar dropped to 27-17 overall and UL-Lafayette improved to 30-12 overall. The Cardinals return to Southland Conference action this weekend when Texas State visits Vincent-Beck Stadium for a three-game series. The Cardinals and Bobcats, who are both 14-4 in SLC play, will play Friday at 6:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.

Lamar struck first with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brian Lloyd reached on a fielding error by shortstop Nathan Long. Erik Kanaby reached on a throwing error by third baseman Matt Hicks. Ryan Baker was hit by a pitch from starter Brent Solich. Collin DeLome followed by getting hit by a pitch to force in Lloyd with the game's first run.

UL-Lafayette scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead. Long was hit by a pitch from starter Justin Walker to start the inning. Matt Hicks doubled to left field to drive in Long. Jefferies Tatford followed with a single to right center to drive in Hicks with the go-ahead run.

  9. UL Baseball Ragin’ Cajun Edge Lamar in Pitcher’s Dual

BEAUMONT, Texas-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns baseball team concluded their four-game road trip with a 3-1 win over Lamar on Tuesday night a Vincent-Beck Stadium.

The Cajuns improved to 30-12 with the win, while the Cardinals dropped to 27-17.

Starting pitcher Brent Solich (4-0) earned the win tossing 7.0 innings. Solich allowed just one unearned run on five hits. The southpaw did not allow an extra-base hit on the night. Solich fanned five batters without issuing a walk.

Gregory Harmon picked up his second save of the season in relief of Solich. Harmon scattered two hits in 2.0 innings of work. The sophomore right-hander fanned three batters without allowing a walk.

Offensively, the Cajuns tallied just five hits on the night, but scratched out three runs en route to the two-run victory.

  12. UL Baseball NCAA Baseball RPI using the Basketball Formula

For fun, SEBaseball.com ran the NCAA Baseball RPI numbers using the Basketball Formula today. Here are the results .

Of course, with the NCAA Basketball RPI, a road game win is worth more than a neutral game win which is worth more than a home win. This is principally why the Cajuns are at #6 with this formula (13 wins on the road). Also, all road wins against top competition are eligible for RPI bonuses (even conference games).

Notice how far Tulane falls in this formula. The Greenies will play precious few non-conference road games this season.

It is interesting to see UL is the highest rated team not from one of the power conference. Also noted is the teams from SEC who play a ton of home games such as LSU dropped.

Yep. And as I stated earlier . Wichita State, San Diego, and Louisiana are the only teams in the real RPI Top 20 that have played more road games than home games. And predictably they are considerably higher in the basketball version of the RPI. And Tulane takes a huge drop.
