I second that. What happened to our "traditional" Mardi Gras weekend baseball tourney?

  3. UL Baseball Ragin' Cajuns Cajun baseball makes it 5-0 with 5-1 win

One of UL coach Tony Robichaux's favorite pearls of baseball wisdom came true again Wednesday night, and because of that the Cajuns are still perfect on the season.

The Cajuns put together a four-run fifth inning in what was otherwise a pitchers' battle at Southeastern Louisiana's Alumni Field, riding that frame to a 5-1 victory over the host Lions for their fourth straight road win.

UL (5-0) worked three hits around two walks and two passed balls provided by the improved Lions (6-2) to plate the four runs, and that was plenty enough for Cajun pitchers Buddy Glass and Danny Farquhar.

"If you look at baseball, 90 percent of the time one team scores more runs in one inning than the other team scores the whole game," Robichaux said. "We had the big inning, and that's why we won."

I vaguely remember last year on his Sat morning radio show coach saying something to the effect that he was looking to move away from hosting tournaments because of economics. By the time he brings three teams to Lafayette, with the associated quarantees of hotel rooms/meals/etc, it was more cost effective to do a deal for a home and home three game series with a single team. Not only that, but with a tourney there is a certain amount of field prep time and management to oversee the additional games the Cajuns are not involved with, which can serve to take time away for your own preparations. Just my thoughts, but I also infer that it is cheaper to bring in a Northern team (note Illinois) this time of year because they have limited options to play right now rather than finding 3 teams for a tourney. We are fortunate that our strong attendance enables us to have the flexiblity for coach to construct a schedule as he sees fit.

Additonally, I believe the UT-SA series was originally set for Lafayette this year, as pay back for our appearance in UT-SA's tourney last year. Robe moved this year's series to SA to avoid the distractions of Mardi Gras.

I thought the basketball games were only being broadcast on 107.9FM. Here's the online link to 107.9; Click on listen live.

Not only that but you have to juggle the fair and the parking problem. And on top of that, when the parades pass by, no one can leave until they remove the baracades. It's really just not feesible to host a Mardi Gras tourney with the Mardi Gras in Lafayette becoming as big as it is.

I would love to see us go back to the Astros Classic at Minute Maid park. That was a blast a few years ago.

Now 25-17 Cajuns. FIU star, Galindo, has just gone out with a probable serious ankle injury. Jay bird says he's not putting any weight on that foot.
