  1. UL Football ROUX: UL pleased with recruitment so far

Football recruiting comes to a temporary halt for every Division I team in the country this week during the American Football Coaches Association convention in San Antonio.

For Rickey Bustle and his UL coaching staff, the "dead" period for contacting prospective high school players comes at a good time.

The Ragin' Cajuns are over halfway to their recruiting numbers goal, with nine verbal commitments for the 16 scholarships that UL will likely have available.

"Right now, we're really pleased with the guys we have," Bustle said Saturday, one day before he departed for the convention. "We're excited about the group ... if we can hold on to them."

UL, coming off a 6-6 season and in the process of making significant changes to its staff, can award no more than 18 scholarships this year and still stay under its squad maximum. Bustle said that two of those will likely go to 2006 signee Frantz Accime, who sat out the fall term, and returning letterman Antwyne Zanders.

"That leaves us basically with 16 when you get right down to it," Bustle said. "We have the numbers available at most of the spots that we were trying to get, and we have a pretty good plan for the rest of them."

I know not everyone of us follows every sport as closely as others. For example, I don't get to attend as many baseball games or women's sports events as I would like. However, for those of you who are not as interested in basketball as other sports, Jan. 20th is the game to go to if you are only going to make one this year. That way you help both football and basketball. It has to be more impressive to football recruits to see a decent crowd enthusiastically supporting the roundballers. The reason I am suggesting this now is so folks can try to keep their plans open for that night. Thanks for considering attending the Jan. 20th basketball game.
