LOUISIANA La. – The 19th-ranked Louisiana’s Lady Cajuns softball team came away victorious in its first matchup with a ranked team in the 2007 season as the Lady Cajuns run-ruled No. 14 Georgia 12-4 in six innings here Friday evening.
After a wild first inning that saw both teams score four runs, the Lady Cajuns (2-0) broke open a one-run game by scoring seven runs combined over the fifth and sixth innings.
The win capped off a perfect day for UL in the 21st Annual Louisiana Classics at Lamson Softball Park. Earlier in the day, the Lady Cajuns run-ruled McNeese State 8-0 in five innings.
The decisive blow came off the bat of true freshman Lana Bowers with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Leading 8-4, Bowers stepped to the plate to pinch hit for Vallie Gaspard with the bases loaded and promptly launched a grand slam over the left center field wall pushing the insurmountable margin to 12-4.
Bowers led the Lady Cajuns with four RBI. Returning redshirt freshman Melissa Verde had three RBI, all coming on a three-run home run in the first inning that staked the Lady Cajuns to an early 4-0 lead.
The inability of pitchers Christie Hamilton and Holly Tankersley to find the strike zone led to several walks in the first three innings. Between the two pitchers 11 walks had been issued through three complete.
The Lady Cajuns began the game by getting their first three hitters to reach base. Meagan Godwin drew a leadoff walk, Tankersley reached on an error and Lacey Bertucci singled home Godwin with the game’s first run.
After a strikeout by Codi Runyan and a fly out from Desi Chatman, it was Verde who launched a line drive home run over the right field fence upping the lead to 4-0.
Georgia benefited from four consecutive walks issued by Tankersley in the bottom of the first inning. The fourth walk brought home the Bulldogs’ first run of the contest. It was immediately followed by a bloop single into shallow center field just out of the reach of Tara Hamilton allowing two more runs to score cutting the Lady Cajuns lead to 4-3.
With a runner on third base and only one out, Kacey Coonce bounced a grounder to second for an RBI that evened the score at 4-all.
The Bulldogs wouldn’t score the rest of the game on Tankersley. She only gave up two more walks in the final five innings and had UGA held to one hit through three complete.
The Lady Cajuns pulled ahead in the third inning when Runyan scored on a wild pitch with two outs and the bases loaded.
Godwin extended the UL lead in the fifth inning when she brought home Karli Hubbard and Gaspard on a double in the left field corner to up the lead to 7-4.
The seventh walk issued to a Lady Cajuns batter set the wheels in motion for the final barrage in the sixth inning.
Bertucci drew a leadoff walk – the fifth time UL put the leadoff hitter on base – then Runyan hit a sharp grounder deep at shortstop. With one out, Christie Hamilton plunked Verde to load the bases.
Hamilton then got Jessica Lemoine to strikeout swinging for the second out. Hubbard then beat out an infield single to drive home the Lady Cajuns’ eighth run of the evening.
The final blow came when Bowers ripped the grand slam pushing the lead to 12-4 creating the necessary margin for the run-rule to take effect at the end of the sixth inning.
Tankersley took the victory for UL in her first start in the pitcher’s circle since the 2004 season. She limited the Bulldogs to only four base hits over six innings and worked around six free passes issued.
Hamilton took the loss for UGA. She was charged with eight earned runs over six innings and surrendered 12 hits to the Lady Cajuns. She issued seven free passes while striking out nine.
The Lady Cajuns and Bulldogs will have a rematch on Saturday at 5 p.m.
Louisiana-Lafayette continues play in the 21st Annual Louisiana Classics on Saturday at 12 Noon meeting Wichita State for the first time in the tournament.

They won the second one 4-3....Jekyll and Hyde, I tell you...Rolled Friday and Saturday...really struggled today.
Still 6-0 after the first weekend. Gets much toughter next weekend though.
Baylor, Iowa St, Purdue, and Ole MIss come to town. Ought to be fun, though!
