UL's 11th-ranked softball team unleashed its offense in a big way Friday in the opening game of the Easton Spring Fling hosted by the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Ragin' Cajuns rapped out seven extra-base hits in a 16-hit attack and rolled past Seton Hall 18-0 in five innings in the first of four round-robin games for UL during the event. The Cajuns (19-2) play twice today and will get a more stern test at 1:30 p.m. when UL takes on unbeaten, third-ranked and tournament host Alabama (16-0). UL meets Seton Hall again at 11 a.m. in today's opener. UL scored five runs in the second inning, four in the third and plated nine in the fourth inning in Friday's easy win, one that featured the Cajuns' biggest run output of the season. TUSCALOOSA -The third-ranked University of Alabama softball team and No. 11 Louisiana-Lafayette set the stage for a heavyweight slugfest Friday, with both teams pounding Seton Hall into submission on the first day of the Easton Spring Fling. The Crimson Tide and the Ragin’ Cajuns both lived up to their reputations as two of the nation’s most potent offensive forces with mercy-rule victories over Seton Hall. Alabama ran its unbeaten record to 18-0 by downing the Pirates 12-0 in five innings after Louisiana-Lafayette (19-2) ripped Seton Hall 18-0. The top showdown in the nation this weekend between ranked teams begins today at 1:30 p.m. Alabama and ULL will play again at the same time Sunday. ULL will open today’s action in the three-team round-robin event at 11 a.m. in another game against Seton Hall. Alabama will play the Pirates again at 4 p.m. “It is going to be a shootout and we are all looking forward to it," Alabama coach Patrick Murphy said. “I think this is one of the most explosive teams we have ever had. We now have 12 players on our team who have hit a home run, and I’ve never had that in my career. They are so much fun to watch and you never know who is going to come through or how big the inning is going to be. “Hopefully our pitchers are going to keep it in the park and we’ll just put the ball in play a lot and continue to play our game." TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - UL's 11th-ranked softball squad never was able to get anything going offensively against third-ranked Alabama on Saturday, and Chrissy Owens was the reason. The Crimson Tide's pitching ace scattered six hits and struck out nine in a seven-inning shutout effort. Alabama remained unbeaten on the season with a 6-0 victory over the Ragin' Cajuns Saturday in UA's own Easton Spring Fling tournament. The Cajuns (20-3) had a 5-2 win against Seton Hall Saturday, after an 18-0 win over the Pirates in Friday's opening round of the double-round-robin event. UL will meet Alabama (19-0) once again at 1:30 p.m. today in the final game of the tournament. UL only managed to get one runner to third base against Owens (9-0), who has five shutouts this year and has allowed only two runs in 54 innings. Her Tide teammates got the only runs Owens would need in the first inning off UL starter Brittany Cuevas (11-1), who suffered her first loss of the season. One inning later, another home run gave the Ragin' Cajuns their second loss in as many days at the Easton Spring Fling. Crimson Tide shortstop Kellie Eubanks' solo homer in the seventh negated a 3-2 UL lead and forced extra innings, and Mandy Burford's three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning provided Alabama with a 6-3 win over the Cajuns in the double-round-robin event's final game. It was Burford's second homer of the game, after her two-out shot to center field in the first inning had given the Crimson Tide an early 2-0 lead. The Cajuns (20-4), who suffered a 6-0 loss to the unbeaten Crimson Tide (21-0) on Saturday, had taken a 3-2 lead in the fifth on Codi Runyan's leadoff homer - three innings after Runyan's two-run single in the second inning had brought UL back from that early 2-0 deficit. When UL's softball team opens Sun Belt Conference play this week, the Ragin' Cajuns will do it in a big way. The 13th-ranked Cajun squad will play six conference games in a five-day period beginning today when UL (20-4) hosts Middle Tennessee in a 1 p.m. doubleheader. The two teams will also play an 11 a.m. single game on Then, the Cajuns will head to Boca Raton, Fla., for a Saturday-Sunday series against new Sun Belt member Florida Atlantic. The teams will play two games at 5 p.m. Saturday and a noon Sunday finale. "It's crazy right now," said UL coach Stefni Lotief. But the compacted schedule was the Cajuns' own doing, and Middle Tennessee helped UL with the scheduling. The Blue Raiders (9-12) agreed to move their Lafayette trip up 10 days so that UL could take part in the prestigious Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif., next week. UL, coming off a split of four games in last weekend's Easton Spring Fling in Tuscaloosa, Ala., which included two losses to unbeaten and third-ranked Alabama, will get some relief from the tight scheduling with the Sun Belt's new format. I don't know what is going on with these girls but it's no good. Although Middle is a decent team (only lost to #4 Arizona by 3 runs) we should easily be putting these small schools away, ESPECIALLY AT HOME.

I guess we don't have the consistent talent and pitching. It seems like Cuevas has fallen into a bad streak, that's 3 games she has dropped in one week after going 11-0.
