Note: Louisiana-Lafayette went 3-0 in pool play to capture the No. 1 seed from Pool “B”. The Ragin’ Cajuns will face Penn State at 1:15 p.m. (CDT) in the quarterfinals of the Championship Bracket on Saturday, March 17. FULLERTON, Calif. – The 17th-ranked Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns softball squad wrapped up pool play in the Judi Garman Classic late Friday night, as they faced Notre Dame, and came away with a victory to finish undefeated (3-0) in pool play. Behind the pitching of Holly Tankersley and a six hit attack from the offense the Cajuns defeated Notre Dame 4-2 to capture the No. 1 seed in Pool B and move into play in the Championship Bracket on Saturday. Louisiana-Lafayette will now face Penn State at 1:15 p.m., CDT, in the quarterfinal round of the Championship Bracket. Tankersley scattered five hits and struck out seven Notre Dame hitters to improve her overall record to 9-3. UL is now 27-6 overall with the win. Notre Dame pitcher Brittney Bargar falls to 6-6 on the season with the complete game loss, and Notre Dame is now 9-10 overall. The Cajuns wasted little time as the took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning on a two out, solo home run from Lacey Bertucci, her sixth of the season. Desi Chatman and Melissa Verde added two out singles for UL, following the Bertucci home run in Louisana's half of the first. Tankersley worked out of trouble in the top of the third after two hit batters and a wild pitch placed Notre Dame runners at second and third with one out. Tankersley forced ground outs to third and second to end the inning and the Cajuns took their 1-0 lead into the bottom of the third inning. Notre Dame tied the score at one in the top half of the fourth inning on a Heather Johnson single to lead off the inning and a Christine Lux double to left field. UL answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as Meagan Godwin led off with a single to center and Vallie Gaspard walked. A Karli Hubbard ground out advanced Godwin and Gaspard to second and third and they would both score on a Tankersley double down the left field line. Tankersley scored on a Bertucci single and at the end of four the Cajuns led 4-1. Notre Dame cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth, as Katie Laing walked and Linda Kohan singled later in the inning. Laign scored on a Cajun error. LOUISIANA SI

My money is on ND, Dave. UL secured the #1 spot in their pool. This game doesnt really mean much for seeding purposes. We might be due for a letdown. Then again, champions never let down, right?

Now the Cajuns face Penn State, somewhat of a shocker to be in this round. Considering they were coming out of a Pool that consisted of Texas, CSFullerton and Depaul.

Cajuns should be favored over PSU who is 11-11 on the season. If and when they do win, it will get much tougher. They will face the winner of Zona and Michigan. Even though Zona is down this year, they will still be tough and Michigan might be the best team in the nation.

We do lose two very important peices of the puzzle in Bertucci and Chatman. But think of a pitching staff that will include Cuervas (who has been nothing short of superb as a Freshman, and Tankersly who is pitching better and better and then add the LA player of the year and one of the top pitchers in the nation in Brignac. Not to mention Hill and Sigur, whom have pitched well in small doses this season.

As of yet, they do not have the box score up, so I am not sure exactly how it all worked out. But the important thing is that the Cajuns face Arizona in the Semi's tommorrow at 8:30 PST. That will be 10:30 am your time. 11:30 my time.

FULLERTON, Calif. - Holly Tankersley's two home runs and the pitching of Brittany Cuevas guided UL's 15th-ranked softball team into the championship semifinals of the Judi Garman Classic Saturday afternoon. But there was also a key defensive play, one by shortstop Codi Runyan, that helped the Cajuns take a 6-5 victory over Penn State in Saturday's quarterfinal round of the nation's most prestigious mid-season collegiate tournament. Penn State, the number two seed from its pool, was holding a 5-4 lead and loaded the bases against Cuevas with one out in the top of the sixth when Runyan ran down a sinking line drive behind third base and ran to the bag for an unassisted double play to end the Nittany Lions' threat. FULLERTON, Calif. - UL's softball team suffered its first loss in the prestigious Judi Garman Classic Sunday in the championship semifinals, and Sarah Akamine had everything to do with that setback. The Arizona freshman designated hitter poked two grand-slam home runs - the first two homers of her college career - and provided more than enough offense for the fifth-ranked Wildcats to post a 9-0 victory over the Ragin' Cajuns in the tournament semifinals. Akamine had her first bases-loaded shot in the third inning to give the Wildcats (21-6) a 5-0 lead over the 15th-ranked Cajuns. She added her second slam in the seventh as insurance, which wasn't needed behind the two-hit pitching of Taryne Mowatt. The Cajuns (28-7), who had posted wins over Fresno State, second-ranked Arizona State, Notre Dame and Penn State to reach Sunday's semifinals, managed only Codi Runyan's second-inning single and a sixth-inning single by Lacey Bertucci off Mowatt (15-6). Please don't let that loss overshadow the great things this team has done in California. There were four pools of play with 4 teams in each pool. Only three teams were 3-0 coming out of pool play. The Lady Cajuns were one of them, Arizona was 2-1. The Cajuns beat Fresno State, Arizona State (ranked #2 in the nation last week) and Notre Dame. They also beat Penn State in a quarter-final game to be elligible to play Arizona in the semi-final. Considering that Michigan, Texas, Oklahoma, Washington, Florida State, DePaul, and North Carolina State are top rated teams and were also in the tournament, our ladies did a great job to be one of the best FOUR. Be proud of them. They brought some recognition to the state and to our school. Positive recognition.

There will be a single game Thursday at Cajun Park at 6 p.m. It is against Southern Miss. Be there. They need your support so there will not be a "let down".

This weekend, the Lady Cajuns play WKU in a three game conference set here at home.

As for the other (Judy Garman) finalists, it's time to start paying attention to the Ragin' Cajuns. Their dismantling at the hands of Mowatt and Akamine aside, the Sun Belt powerhouses continue to prove themselves against a tough nonconference schedule. Louisiana-Lafayette lost some power from the lineup after last season, but freshman pitcher Brittany Cuevas had been performing brilliantly as the ace before hitting trouble against Arizona.
