It really is disrespectful the way ESPN treats us. If we have any pride left the administration needs to do something and they need to do it yesterday. Just imagine if you were in charge of an organization and someone was at your place calling you by the wrong name and laughing. I would kick some a** to the burb immediately. Over the course of the game I probably heard 5 different references (not including the Monroe one). And by the way, it's not a guy in Bristol calling us Monroe, it's the guy that's physically in Lafayette who has been there for 2 days!! There's no way to mess that up unless it's on purpose.

I hate being called "ULL" and hate being called "Lafayette." I'd rather change our name to University of Acadiana and go by "Acadiana" than just give up and be cool with being called Lafayette or ULL.

...boy it sure feels like the sky is falling. The loss last night really blew.

If I've learned anything in life it's that it's extremely hard to get someone to do something they don't want to do. We can't just force ESPN to call us Louisiana if they don't want to. I know for a fact that ESPN knows we want to be called Louisiana and that our administration tries to convince them to call us UL to no avail. I don't know what else the administration can do here. How do we "take a stand" against ESPN?

    It's obvious what happened here.

The announcers did all their pregame research on the fan websites of UL's opponents and grabbed every reference in the book.

Either that or they read Kathleen Thames La Louisiane

What is so confounding is when Hud was on ESPN, they called us Louisiana. They just named a mid-year All American team and named Brett Baer - Louisiana on first team. Yet, they televise our games and report our scores and we get the multiple name references. I would really like to know just what our AD and SID discuss with them in that regard and why they are so oblivious to our requests.

It's just the arrogance of their network. ESPN is essentially a monopoly since there isn't a true 24/7 sports competitor so they do what they want. The truth is they probably will never have a competitor since it would take billions to compete at that level. Not to metion the decade long contracts they have in almost every sport conbined with the financial backing and access that Disney has. The attitude is that they are doing us a favor by putting us on TV. They know we aren't a revenue generator like the big conferences so they don't care how they treat us.

It's out of our hands, except for our individual efforts, until our leadership does something. Maybe they're doing something, as the SID implied. They probably are, or else they would have surrendered to the names others want for us. Unless they make an announcement that they request the city tag be used, know they are on your side to the extent they can for the time being.

I agree that last night's broadcast was brutal. I had all I could stand of Joe Testosterone or whoever he was in the span of five minutes and muted the rest of the game.

I also saw some time ago that Jay posted about how understaffed the athletic department is. I have no doubt that is true. I guess they're tackling one obstacle at a time and the name one is probably a political nightmare for them.

Blame Dr. A and the university for not going with Louisiana University back in 2000 that would have kept us as the only university with that name instead of tieing us at the hip with UL Monroe. Given the success of schools like South Florida, North Texas, South Alabama, Central Florida, Southern Cal, etc., we could have kept USL and changed to the University of South Louisiana. But, we chose the hard route with a name that after 12 years is still in turmoil. Students pick up any publication within the university and they are Lafayetted to death. How confused are students when they get exactly what the networks are doing from within the university itself? The same for alumni. Did you just read the latest publication of LaLouisiane? UL Lafayette is used hundreds of times throughout. How does anyone know what to use or not use? You can't even buy merchandise without Lafayette on it. This whole thing is a joke and the administration is to blame. Just the tiniest bit of vision would have set this university on a better identity path.
