Thread: ROUX: DE Kyle Cox commits to Louisiana

  1. UL Football ROUX: DE Kyle Cox commits to Louisiana

UL's football squad got its first verbal commitment on the defensive side of the ball Thursday, getting a pledge from defensive end Kyle Cox of Barbers Hill, Texas.

The 6-foot-4, 240-pound Cox, a two-time All-District 21-4A selection, gives the Ragin' Cajuns a total of four commitments to the 2007 recruiting class. Cox was one of approximately a dozen prospects to make an official visit to UL last weekend.

"The coaching staff didn't try to pressure me into anything," Cox said Thursday. "They told me it was more important to be somewhere where I would enjoy my four years, and I thought that I could there."

Twice first team all-district in one of Texas' tougher 4A districts. Listed as a LB in Texas Football's 'Texas Top 300' list.

His team was 10-0 in the regular season this year.

Kyle Cox DE; Barbers Hill HS, TX 6'4" 230lbs.
    Rivals: N/A Scout: N/A
    Film:

He seems strong, but stiff as hell. I mean at first I wasn't a fan of getting a 230 lb. DE, then I saw guys like T.Hills come in and be really light, then H. Davis and Lanaux. The difference between all those guys and this guy, as far as his film shows, is quickness. I hate to be negative because I really beleive Bustle knows what he's doing but, I don't know I just get a weiry feeling about this one.
But what the hell do I know; I sincerely hope he shocks me and makes me look like an idiot, but I stand by my opinion from this film.

From past recruits under Bustle, probably not. He will most likely be redshirted and be bulked up around 10-20 #'s and stay at DE. This coaching staff (ok..... the most recent combination) likes to move smaller players down to utilize speed. SS>LB, LB>DE, DE>DT, etc.
From film, this guy does not have the speed to play LB, but does have enough speed for DE with a good frame to build on. From film, he looks like he has good lateral movement and plays with good mechanics and leverage.

Remember, this was also under different coordinaters. I thought with his size, hed be moved to LB, and now after seeing the video, I more than ever I feel that theyll move him to LB, due to our depth at DE in the next couple of years (We've recruited that position heavily in the last 2 years).

At 6'4" and 230# this kid will be a DE. I don't know too many LB's who are 6'4". I am sure he will get bigger. I like what I see from the film. Of course I hope he puts on another 20-30 or so pounds. We have a history of DE's who weigh about 240 and it is time to step it up.

He seems like a tweener - DE/LB. The coaching staff probably sees something in his raw skills, work ethic, leadership, potential size (genetic evaluation), hs coaches evaluation, etc. I want to see the prototypical LB or DE, with given size, speed and experience at their respective position, be the ones we recruit. But, I also know that we may be in a situation that we target an outstanding player/person, overlooked by many due to a current deficiency in one of the "obvious" categories, and work with them. That certainly isn't ideal... but we could get guys in here that "look like" prototypical specimens on paper and maybe even on these video highlights, and turn out to be duds.
