  1. Research Academic requirements paying off for ULathletes

At least six hours a week Ashley Ragan spends time in study hall.

While she studies more hours than that in a week, the six hours she puts in are part of her requirements of being the mid-infielder on UL's softball team. Like other athletes, Ragan manages her time around her classes and her sport. In the offseason, she said she's in practice about two and a half hours a day.

"It's tough, but if you put your mind to it, you can do it," Ragan said. "I love it. I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have sports."

Mandatory study hall and other academic requirements for UL's athletes are put in place not only to keep them eligible to play, but eligible for their degree, said Danny Cottonham, director of UL's student athlete academic center.

Last week, the NCAA released its most recent team-by-team graduation success rates for student-athletes who began classes between 1996 and 1999.

According to the data, UL's men's golf team and women's tennis team had the highest graduation success rates of other teams on campus. The golf team's graduation rate was 89 percent, while the rate for the women's tennis team was 78 percent.

    Been there, done that too.

At 530 today, i will be there and do that again.

If I am twice a UL graduate, does that mean that I have to give back twice as much?

Hey, Rhineaux, I wish I had known you were going to be graduating this afternoon. I was there watching my baby bro get his Masters; I would have done a shout out for you!

On a sidenote, as I was entering the dome, I spied Coach Lee and staff exiting. Guess they were preparing for the game today. Witnessed several of them congratulating undergraduates, obviously strangers to them, who were leaving their ceremony. That was really cool to see.

Four times. The equation is the square of the number of times you graduate. Sorry, I don't make the rules.

  12. Research UL System pushes for more grads

The six-year graduation of rate of UL's students who began at UL in 2000 and finished at UL last fall was about 40 percent, Bruder said. She noted that the rate doesn't take into account those students who may have left the university and earned that degree at another institution within six years.

  13. Research Re: UL System pushes for more grads

Mentoring students through college and encouraging middle schoolers to plan for their future are some of the ways UL System President Sally Clausen says the system will increase graduation rates in the next five years.

"We're cognizant that we have to graduate or participate in the graduation of more high school students. Right now, we lose 40 percent of our high school students," she said.

Last week, Clausen reiterated a plan the system placed in motion in 2005 to push graduation rates within the system's eight institutions above the national average, which now is at 53 percent.

It's not a lofty goal, said Carolyn Bruder, UL's director of academic planning and faculty development.
