Thread: ROUX: OL Matt McCants commits to UL

  1. UL Football ROUX: OL Matt McCants commits to UL

Two of UL's early football commitments have already insured the Ragin' Cajuns of some size in the spring 2007 recruiting class.

The Cajuns received their third verbal commitment Monday, getting a pledge from 6-foot-6, 285-pound offensive tackle Matt McCants of Williamson High in Mobile, Ala.

McCants, who is in his first year of high school football, visited Saturday for UL's game against North Texas.

"I felt I was welcome there," McCants said. "The atmosphere was nice and I enjoyed the experience."

Football itself is a new experience for McCants, who spent his previous high school seasons in the school band carrying a tuba.

"I always wanted to play," he said. "I had played when I was young and in junior high, but my mom always told me my future was in the band trying to get a band scholarship."

The coaches obviously see potential in this guy, and you can't teach 6' 6''. Cut him some slack wait till next year to start in with the tuba jokes.

You are right. But, next year he will be working on fundamentals, and perhaps adding to his weight. He won't be on the field. A friend of mine was a first chair all-state trumpet player in South Carolina, played 2 years of high school football, and was recruited by Georgia Tech and Georgia. Oh, and he benched in excess of 450 lbs. That ain't no lie. He has arms the size of tree trunks. And, again, is an outstanding trumpet player.

Seems I recall a trumpet player from St Aug that didn't play high school football either; but burned the Saints many sundays catching passes for the falcons! You can't teach size and speed. This kid seems to have the frame to build with and a redshirt year to get better at the position. Have a little faith.

Your calling 6'6 285 undersized lol go look at West Virginia O-line, every guy they recruited is a guard and I think they are a lot more UNDERSIZED than us but they seem to be effective so I think 6'6 285 in a college weight room is far from undersized.

I certainly hope you are correct. I didn't know recruiters scout the band.

No tuba jokes. I never heard of such a situation. I don't know if I trust these coaches to know what they are talking about. But at this point I say why not.
The guy has never played football? You can't coach speed but there is football speed and track speed. The two are different. 6'6 is a good size perhaps simply taking up space can provide Desameaux with some protection.

Look at a lot of the lineman recruited out of high school...most of the time it is strictly on size because you can teach talent, you can't teach size.

So the last time he played football was middle school? I hope you are right. It just seems strange to me. However like I said at this point why not?

I can go down a list of players who are in the nfl who didn't play much in high school...as a matter of fact Brandon Stokley only played 1 year of football.
