Smothers & Lamy tabbed Sun Belt Players of the Week

LOUISIANA La. - Ragin' Cajun running back Travis Smothers and whip safety Patrick Lamy were named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively, for their efforts this past Saturday at South Carolina.

Smothers made an impressive I-A college football debut. With brother Warrick Dunn in attendance, Smothers notched 113 yards on 19 carries. He became the first Cajun to top 100 yards rushing in a game since Jerome Coleman rumbled for 159 yards at Idaho on Oct. 20, 2001, a span of 16 games without a 100-yard performance.

With three seconds remaining in the first half, the Cajuns Michael Adams blocked Josh Brown’s 29-yard field goal attempt. Lamy scooped-up the ball and raced the length of the field untouched for a touchdown which tied the game at 7-7.

Lamy’s 89-yard blocked field goal return for a touchdown is the longest defensive touchdown return for the Cajuns since Ron Irvin returned an interception 90 yards at Arkansas State on Nov. 5, 1977. In fact, there are only two returns in school history longer than Lamy’s, Irvin’s 90-yard jaunt and Luther Perrin’s 105-yard interception return vs. Stephen F. Austin on Nov. 9, 1934.

The blocked field goal return for a touchdown is the first in Sun Belt Conference history.

The individual Sun Belt weekly honors are the eighth and ninth for Louisiana. It also marks the second time that the Cajuns have captured two individual awards in one week. Eric Rekeita and Sean Comiskey were named offensive and special teams players of the week, respectively, on Nov. 11, 2002. No Cajun has been named Sun Belt Player of the Week more than once.

The Cajuns are still in search of their first Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week winner.

I know lots of coaches who have been in the business for a long time and their family's have not missed any meals. This team should run the option better, they have been doing for years. I think I will wait a few more games before I talk about any heels about the team.

LOUISIANA La. — Jerry Babb could have been excused for being nervous.

The St. Thomas More product was starting his first college game as a redshirt freshman quarterback, and was doing it in front of 82,227 fans at South Carolina.

If he had been shaky, who’s to blame him?

But that, clearly, is not Babb’s way.

In that pressure cooker, he hit 12-of-25 passes for 134 yards including gains of 30 yards to Bill Sampy and 28 to Fred Stamps. He audibled. He scrambled for a big first down.

In short, he played like he’d been there before, which he hadn’t.

LOUISIANA La. -- University of Louisiana football coach Jerry [Rickey] Bustle put last Saturday's near-miss at South Carolina behind him Monday and then warned his Ragin' Cajuns to do the same.

The Cajuns, heavy underdogs in their season-opener at South Carolina, shocked many in taking the Gamecocks to the final play before losing 14-7.

"Nobody cares about that anymore," Bustle said Monday at his weekly news conference. "That's behind us; we're not looking for pats on the back. We should have won the football game we had a chance to win that football game.

"(But) that one is over."

Bustle said instead of dwelling on "what could have been" the Cajuns must direct all of their focus on this weekend's game against Louisiana Tech. That game, a Sun Belt Conference game, is set for 7 p.m. Saturday at Cajun Field.
