    UL Football

I watched the second half here in Lafayette on channel 605. I ordered the games on Friday and Cox told me it was a 5 game deal on channel 801. There were two games on 801 starting at 11:00 am. and then at 6:00, nothing. I finally got thru with cox and the person I was speaking with was in Texas. He showed I bought the programming but it was to end at 6:00 pm. A friend of mine and his wife took off for Pete's to watch and my girlfriend and I listened on the radio till halftime. At the start of the second half I was channel surfing and there it was on channel 605. Do not know if it was always there or Cox had just put it on.
Overall a great game. Highly dissapointed in Cox Cable.
Let's pack Cajun Field next week.

Does anyone else think that putting Rekieta in for the beginning of the second half hurt the cajuns. I felt as though the momentum was lost when he went three and out. I hate to second guess coach Bustle, but i have to wonder if that was the best move; especially considering the GREAT job Babb was doing.

Not that I know of, if I am not mistaken he was moved back to fullback.

Perhaps we didn't see him because of so few third and short situations. I don't know.

I sat on the phone with a Cox rep for 3 quarters. Now as I look back I wonder if they thought Abbeville Cox was part of Lafayette Cox.

It seems they should know better, but at about halftime he thought I should be able to see the game on 605.

Perhaps my efforts helped out in Lafaytte.

I hope our fans treated you well if you were there in person.
Thanks BatCock, I'm feeling a little proud of the Ragin' Cajuns right about now.

I know the coaches and players are probably kicking themselves, but I'm measuring the team against the last year’s team and the teams of the drought years since Jake Delhomme left the program.

Last year coach Bustle came in and instilled some discipline, but he had no depth.

I guess I am a little gun-shy but when the game was half way through the first half I thought it would be a repeat of last years Texas A&M opener. In that game the offense turned the ball over 6 times in the first half. Ironically that was when I knew we had good coaching. At half we were only down 3-0. By the end of the game due to a severe lack of depth, we were down 31-7.

This year I saw improvement in every facet of the game for Louisiana.

Enough about us. Y'all won the game congratulations. I think a bright spot for your team might be pass coverage. Last year no one could double cover Frederick Stamps, and I doubt too many will be able to do so this year. But you did.

Geaux out and win some games, your my SEC school of choice this year.

I have no idea what's official but the whole perimeter (Congress/Bertrand) is available with grass.

It seems to me that if we fill this up it would be incredibly great advertising to any passerby.

What we would need then is a last second Trolley Shuttle to round everyone up and get them in for Victory Run.

  8. Default tailgating

What is the deal with all the gravel. What is the final goal for cajun field, i hope they leave some grassy areas so we can tailgate. As of now, where can and cant we set up tents and such? Was there ever an announcement made, im sure there was, and does anyone have a link to it. please post

  9. UL Football Game Cajun Effort

South Carolina holds off Cajuns by a touchdown.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — When it comes, a victory over a Southeastern Conference team will be special, indeed.

Until then, Louisiana will have to take positives from Saturday night’s 14-7 loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Led by a breakout 113-yard rushing game from freshman Travis Smothers, big-play special teams and a resilient defense, coach Rickey Bustle’s squad played toe-to-toe with the three-touchdown favorites.

They couldn’t get the game-winning play, but they took a solid step into the 2003 campaign.

“There’s nothing for them to hang their heads about,” Bustle said. “I challenged them last night to make a decision to win, and I thought they did that.

“They played their hearts out, but the key will be whether we come back out on Monday with the mindset to be a better team.”

Smothers entered training camp a week into drills as a result of conversations between older brother Warrick Dunn and UL running backs coach Brian Jenkins, and on Saturday he fashioned the first 100-yard game by a Cajun back since Jerome Coleman’s 159 at Idaho on Oct. 20, 2001.

“I was just trying to execute and make the best of my opportunity,” said Smothers, who included a 36-yard dash in his 19 carries. “I’m picking the offense up slowly, but surely.

“I didn’t know how good I was going to play. I just prayed about it and tried to play hard.

“The offensive line did a good job today. They made a wide crease, and I hit it.”

    USL (1960-1983) (1985-1998) Looked a lot better

They looked a lot better than last year. The O-line is the problem area. They cannot open holes or protect. It may be the losing factor for the year.

By the way, Cox is terrible, I watch the entire game on Direct TV. The weather was horrible at my house and never lost a signal.

  12. UL Football SportsNotes & Quotes from the USC game

Coaches' and Players' SportsNotes & Quotes from the first game of the University of Louisiana's 2003 football season ...

The 89 yard return of a blocked field goal for a touchdown by Patrick Lamy of Louisiana on the final play of the first half may have been the longest ever return of a blocked kick against the Gamecocks. The last blocked kick returned for a touchdown against South Carolina was a nine yard return of a blocked punt by Florida in 1996

    Louisiana Head Coach Rickey Bustle

"I am really pleased with our effort tonight. I told the kids not to hang their heads, they played hard and they played well. I don't like to talk about moral victories, but tonight was one of them."

"Our defensive unit played their hearts out. They did a great job tonight. Our defensive staff is doing a great job. We have a little more depth this year on the defensive side. Our secondary played very well."

Jerry Babb played well, especially for his first football game. The 80,000 fans were really quiet tonight, with the exception of a few plays. It's always tough to start your first game, let alone in a place like this with 80,000+ fans yelling and screaming, but it didn't seem like 80,000 tonight."

"I was very pleased with our running game. Offensively, our guys worked very hard. We had a good effort on our line to open up some holes for our running game."

South Carolina Head Coach Lou Holtz
Louisiana [] had a nice game plan. Their coach had a nice game plan. Their back out of the backfield caused us a mismatch.

    Our secondary, played well.

We just couldn't get the running game going. We had some people open in the first half, and we had a lot of drops in first half.

We did not have a lot of running room. It could be the reads. I'll have to look at the film. We didn't run the ball well.

On the blocked field goal: Either it was a slow snap or a slow kick. The concern I had was Josh Brown is a three-step placekicker but a two-step punter.

We never go could get them in a one-dimensional game.

    QB Jerry Babb

"We wanted to make sure that we were not put in bad situations."

"Good game plan. They didn't show too much that we [did not] expect."

    "USC is a good team."

"Defensively, they had a really good game plan."

"They [the fans] were loud. It made it tough on us."

    RB Travis Smothers

"I just tried to execute [the] plays to the best of my ability."

    "I'm still learning the offense."

"I have to give credit to the offensive line. They opened up big holes for me all day."

"I just went out and tried to play hard."

    DB Michael Adams

(Blocked field goal at the end of the first half)

"Well, we had the block right play on. I was in because coach [Coach Bustle] knew I could get off the line quick."

"Everything thing in my head said 'I had to make a big play', because I'm not going to get in a lot. I'm only a freshman."

"It felt great to play in front of 80,000 people. It was a great atmosphere."

"We felt we had a win under our belt."

    S Patrick Lamy

(Returned blocked field goal for touchdown in second quarter)

"My job on that play is to make sure there's no fake."

"I think USC is a good team. We fell short but it still feels good. It gives us a little confidence, but we still didn't win."

    [USC]Jamacia Jackson

"We played real hard. They (UL) played really hard and they never gave up. They are not a slouch team - they gave it their all."

The attendance of 82,227 was the fourth largest opening game crowd in Williams-Brice Stadium history.
