South Carolina holds off Cajuns by a touchdown.
COLUMBIA, S.C. — When it comes, a victory over a Southeastern Conference team will be special, indeed.
Until then, Louisiana will have to take positives from Saturday night’s 14-7 loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks.
Led by a breakout 113-yard rushing game from freshman Travis Smothers, big-play special teams and a resilient defense, coach Rickey Bustle’s squad played toe-to-toe with the three-touchdown favorites.
They couldn’t get the game-winning play, but they took a solid step into the 2003 campaign.
“There’s nothing for them to hang their heads about,” Bustle said. “I challenged them last night to make a decision to win, and I thought they did that.
“They played their hearts out, but the key will be whether we come back out on Monday with the mindset to be a better team.”
Smothers entered training camp a week into drills as a result of conversations between older brother Warrick Dunn and UL running backs coach Brian Jenkins, and on Saturday he fashioned the first 100-yard game by a Cajun back since Jerome Coleman’s 159 at Idaho on Oct. 20, 2001.
“I was just trying to execute and make the best of my opportunity,” said Smothers, who included a 36-yard dash in his 19 carries. “I’m picking the offense up slowly, but surely.
“I didn’t know how good I was going to play. I just prayed about it and tried to play hard.
“The offensive line did a good job today. They made a wide crease, and I hit it.”
