HATTIESBURG, Miss. - After being in position to take the tournament championship, the Ragin' Cajuns golf team suffered a setback on Tuesday to slide to eight place after posting a final round score of 296 (+12) at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate.
"We played 27 good holes and then struggled at the half way mark," head coach Theo Sliman said. "The team never recovered. We made it to the final group today, which is a good thing, but we never made the best of it. It is almost like we tried too hard and couldn't get back to where we were at the start of the tournament. This is a learning experience, and will only make us better as the season progresses."
Ole Miss finished first at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate holding off Mississippi State by a stroke with a final score of seven-under par (845). The Bulldogs had the best round of the day (276, -8) to finish in second at six-under par (846).
South Alabama (850), Louisiana Tech (851), Southeastern La. (853) and Samford (853) rounded out the top five teams. Tech's Victor Lange held on to win individual medalist honors at eight-under (205).
Both Brandt Garon and Yohann Vora carded a 74 in the final round to finish in a tie for 14th at even par (213) for the tournament.
Freshman Ross Davis dropped 13 spots to place in a tie for 43rd after a third round score of 75. Davis finished the event at seven-over par (220).
Ethan Savoy had a good final round tallying a 73 to end up in a tie for 49th at eight-over par (221), while Peter Lamaris dropped into a tie for 64th with a three-round total of 225.
"We have a lot of competitive guys on this team. It's going to be a juggling match to come up with the right combination," Sliman added. "Good thing is it's early for us and we have plenty of time to figure it out."
Louisiana continues the fall season next weekend as the Cajuns head to Golf Week Challenge in Burlington, Iowa.
