HAMMOND, La. - The Ragin' Cajuns soccer team could not hold off a second half surge by Southeastern La. as UL fell to the Lions 4-2 in a non-conference match on Sunday afternoon at the SLU Soccer Complex in Hammond, La.
"We came out and the girls played well in the first half," head coach Scot Wieland said. "Our play in the second half really dropped off, and that is the reason for the result. We are getting there as the team has continued to improve each time out. The next step we have to make is to be consistent as a team."
The Cajuns (4-3) owned a 16-11 shot advantage on the Lions (4-2) in the contest while also winning the corner battle 8-5. Senior Kayle Henrie led the squad with four shots on the afternoon with two coming on frame.
UL jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 9th minute when senior Erin Lynn knocked in the rebound of a Gayla Foster shot. Lynn leads the Cajuns with four goals on the season.
"Erin Lynn is doing a great job in the middle," Wieland stated. "She stepped up and has played as well as you can ask of a senior."
The Lions pulled even at 1-all in the 18th minute on a goal off of a corner kick by Cheyenne Maxwell.
It didn't take Louisiana long to get back in front as Shelby Isley notched her third goal of the year in the 28th minute to make the score 2-1 Cajuns.
The Ragin' Cajuns would see their lead disappear in the 54th minute when SLU's Kayla Vera and Shanyce Shaw combined to find Maiya Cooper for a goal to tie the score at 2-2.
Southeastern La. took the lead in the 77th minute on a Jen Babcock rebound goal. Less than a minute later Vera capped the scoring in the contest for the Lions when she found the back of the net to make the score 4-2 SLU.
UL returns to action next weekend as the Cajuns close out the non-conference slate facing Campbell and Gardner-Webb at the Catamount Classic in Cullowhee, N.C.
