UL baseball coach Tony Robichaux said that this was a good year for high school players in the Acadiana area, and that was reflected on the first day of the early period of national letter signings. It also is apparently a good year for pitching locally. The Cajuns squad inked six players on Wednesday's first day of the signing period, four of them Acadiana prospects and three of them highly-regarded pitchers. UL got signed letters from right handers Mike Cook of Lafayette High and Dayton Marze of Teurlings Catholic and southpaw Patrick Holloway of Opelousas Catholic. The Cajuns also signed standout Acadiana High middle infielder Greg Fontenot. "We think having these guys in our class gives us a very good organizational blend," Robichaux said. "We filled some immediate needs for next year, and at the same time we've got some good young kids that will be with us for three or four years." The local push continued for UL's baseball team on the second day of the early signing period Thursday for the national letter of intent. The Cajuns inked three more players on Thursday after signing six on the opening day, and Thursday's trip included a pair of Acadiana-area outfielders in Lafayette High's Brian Bowman and Matthew Goulas of Catholic-New Iberia. UL had signed four local products on Wednesday, including pitchers Mike Cook of Lafayette High, Dayton Marze of Teurlings Catholic and Patrick Holloway of Opelousas Catholic along with middle infielder Greg Fontenot of Acadiana. The biggest "name" signee on Thursday, though, came from further west. UL got a signed letter from standout Lake Charles-Barbe catcher Thad Griffen, a 6-foot-2, 200-pounder who figures to be a high selection in next summer's major league draft. Catholic High pitcher Matt Goulas didn’t take long to decide where he wanted to play baseball in college. In fact, it probably takes him more time to warm up before a taking the mound for a game than it did to choose where to go to college. And when the decision was that easy to make, waiting until the spring to make it wasn’t necessary. The CHS senior made his decision last week, sending his commitment and signed papers to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette during the early signing period that began last week. “I’m really excited and I can’t wait to play on the next level,” said Goulas. “As a kid I always liked UL and people would ask me where I would like to go and I always answered UL. “Now that I had the opportunity, I couldn’t pass it up.” The rest of the story NEAL MCCLELLAND The Daily Iberian
