Acadiana Mom on a Mission to Raise Scholarship Money for UL Students

One Acadiana mother with the help of the community is raising scholarship money for UL Lafayette students all in memory of her son.

Carol Trosclair says her son David never missed school and he called her one morning saying, "Mom, I'm going to take some medicine to get better so I can go to class."

David Trosclair never made it to class that August day two years ago. He took a combination of prescription medication and over the counter meds creating a lethal combination. David's heart stopped beating.

"I was of course shocked and I didn't know and of the professors at UL, but they came to David's funeral and spoke on his behalf at UL," said Carol.

David planned on becoming a physical therapist. He was an honor student and a kinesiology major, spending the majority of his time on campus. In December 2010, he graduated posthumously and David's professors created the David Trosclair Memorial Scholarship.

"These students will be able to accomplish goals and dreams that unfortunately David didn't get to do," said Charity Bryan, Director of the School of Kinesiology at UL.

"That was a wonderful honor and tribute to David, but it is up to me to fund it."

This year the Trosclairs hope to raise more than fifteen thousand dollars in scholarships. They say other departments have donors who are able to give millions of dollars, but their group is a lot of people working together to raise a lot of money.

"We're trying to get as much going in the fund so we can help as many students as possible," said Bryan.

You can help the Trosclairs and the Kinesiology department at UL raise money for scholarships the whole month of September.

You can purchase tickets for ten dollars and get your car washed at Todd's. Several other businesses are joining in the fundraising efforts to raise fifteen thousand dollars. The goal is to give one five thousand dollar scholarship and ten one thousand dollar scholarships this year.

To purchase tickets, call Carol Trosclair at (337) 255-8155 or go to the Orchard in Lafayette or Mr. Keet's Restaurant on Ambassador Caffery. You can also visit www.thedailysportsbuzz.com.
