Thread: Not a bad start for Cajun hoops

  1. UL Basketball Not a bad start for Cajun hoops

If Monday’s exhibition game showed anything, it’s that UL’s men’s basketball team is going to win with defense.

The Cajuns put on the defensive clamps in Monday’s second half against Spring Hill College, limiting the visiting Badgers to 5-of-20 shooting and outscoring their guests 37-20 after halftime on the way to a 65-51 exhibition victory.

UL’s starting guard threesome of Ross Mouton, David Dees and Rhett Hebert combined for 45 of the team’s 65 points, but head coach Robert Lee liked what he saw on the defensive end a lot more.

“For the most part we played good defense the whole game,” Lee said. “That team’s scary the way they shot the ball against Florida State (15 three-pointers), but in the second half our defensive effort was really good and we defended their shooters really well.”

That same springhill team was beating florida state at halftime...it ended in a route but they are a good naia school. Sure its not something to look at and say we will do anything this year but we learned we do have guys that will play together and not like the guys did last year.

    I did a little research.

Lafayette High School enrollment - 2300
Spring Hill College enrollment - 1400

It was an EXHIBITION game, so don't get too worked up one way or the other! Basically it is a glorified scrimmage. That is not a put-down of Spring Hill College. It doesn't matter who the exhibition is against, it doesn't count in the won-loss column. Besides, they seemed to given a pretty good accounting of themselves against Florida State the other night.

UL Basketball Re: Not a bad start for Cajun hoops

I am new to this site. I have been reading post here for over a year now and decided to become a member. I am an alumni at (The University of Louisiana ) and follow the sports programs (football, men’s basketball mainly). I will agree that we should beat any NAIA school; but size of the campus has nothing to do with how good of a team you have. Wake Forest and Gonzaga have less that 4300 undergraduates and I don't think our team compares to them at all. We are in a rebuilding mode and I hope we can win enough games so Coach Lee can keep his job. Looking at the schedule if we can't sneak up on a few people, we will be in bad shape. Right now it looks like this team is going to be below .500 and I hope we can make the tournament. I do think that three years from now we can look back and say it was worth it. It is going to be a tough road this year and next. I think Robert has the right ideal if he can hang on to reap the rewards. I will be supporting the team no matter what they do, because that is what a true fan does.
