Sociologists call it the “Flutie Effect,” referring to the phenomenon that occurs when having a successful college sports team translates into increased exposure and prominence of a university. It’s named after former Boston College quarterback Doug Flutie who raised the awareness of what was once a largely unknown school, after leading an upset in a 1984 game against the University of Miami.
