  3. UL Basketball Lady Cajuns starting to hit stride

UL’s women’s basketball squad is starting to play the way coach J. Kelley Hall envisioned in Sun Belt Conference play, and that’s as well as almost anyone in the league.

In a 48-hour stretch, the Cajuns humbled Denver 72-52 and rolled past Florida International 84-73 in a game that shouldn’t have been that close. Denver followed that Thursday loss by popping UL Monroe 51-33, and FIU was coming off a 56-41 win over South Alabama on Thursday prior to the Saturday loss to UL.

In other words, the Cajuns went up against two teams that were playing pretty well on Thursday and Saturday, and won the two games by a combined 31 points.

  4. UL Basketball Lady cajuns prefer to win with defense

They rank among the Sun Belt Conference leaders in defense and in rebounding, and rank in the nation's top 20 in three different defensive categories.

So what's with UL's women's basketball squad having to score 84 points - their most in a Sun Belt game in almost two seasons - to win Saturday?

"We'd rather not have had to do that," said Cajun coach J. Kelley Hall of his team's 84-73 home win over Florida International. "We got really tired late, made some critical turnovers and missed some shots, but I never thought that they (FIU) could get it all the way back."

The Cajuns led by 24 points in the second half against a FIU team that hadn't lost in conference play. The Panthers cut the margin to nine points several times down the stretch but never got any closer during a frenetic second half that saw 94 points scored.

  5. UL Basketball Lady Cajuns of UL to bring top-tier defense

UL's women's basketball team has won two straight Sun Belt Conference games, and if the cards fall as expected, the Ragin' Cajuns should extend that streak to three wins today.

The Cajuns (12-5, 4-2) take on North Texas' struggling Mean Green (4-10, 1-3) at 5 p.m. at UNT's Super Pit, playing its strongest suit against the hosts' weakest hands.

North Texas ranks last in the Sun Belt in shooting (36.4 percent overall, 24.0 percent on three-pointers) and is averaging 54 points per game in league play. The Cajuns, meanwhile, are the league's top defensive team, with opponents making only 33.3 percent of their shots.

  9. UL Basketball Cajun women rally in second half for win over Mean Green

DENTON, Texas - For a while, it appeared the league's worst-shooting team wasn't ever going to miss a shot.

When North Texas finally did, though, UL's women's basketball team was there to take advantage.

The Ragin' Cajun women rallied from as much as a 12-point deficit with a second-half blitz that provided an 85-76 victory over the Mean Green in a Sun Belt Conference contest Thursday at UNT's Super Pit.

UL (13-5, 5-2 Sun Belt), winner of its third straight, trailed 44-34 at halftime, but they came out in a first-time half-court trap defense to start the second half. It took a while to have the desired effect, but a UNT squad that hit 51.5 percent from the floor in the first half made only eight of its last 24 shots in the final 15 minutes.

About the time the Mean Green cooled off, Yolanda Jones heated up.

Two weeks ago the ladies were showing the effects of an eleven game road trip to start the season. With a little rest and a chance to play at home, they now have the tools to make some noise in the Sun Belt. While I believe they have a great deal of work to do to beat Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee, both of whom they have to play on the road this season, they have the talent and ability, when they are focused, to beat all the other teams in the league. With the Sun Belt tournament in town, we may have a shot at post season play.

I lost complete interest in the Sun Belt tournament being put on here in Lafayette because it was obvious last year that the men's team wouldn't be in it. I hate to say it, but it completely slipped my mind that the women's tournament would also be played here. What a great oportunity for a large crowd to witness the best women's team to ever play for UL. To go from bottom of the barrel to consistent year after year post season expections needs to be applauded. It really is amazing. If these women make it to the NCAA tournament and move past the first round, the media will bring a lot of attention to the accomplishments made by the Hall's.

I will be there because not only us but Middle Tenn. is one of the best teams not only in the conference but in the country.

  14. UL Basketball LAdy Cajuns show they can shoot a little

The rap on UL's women's basketball team is that it can't shoot. But try to convince North Texas of that, after the Cajun women hit half its three-pointers and almost all of its free throws Thursday night.

UL made four of its last five three-pointers and finished up 7-of-14 outside the arc in Thursday's 85-76 win. And, a Cajun team that shot less than 58 percent from the free throw line all season made 18-of-23, including six of eight in the last 54 seconds when the game was on the line.

Yolanda Jones was responsible for much of the team's shooting, hitting 14 of her 21 shots on the way to a season-high 30 points.

"She stepped up big for us," said Cajun coach J. Kelley Hall. "She had to play 40 minutes, and she answered the call."

  15. UL Basketball Lady Cajuns take on WKU Today

UL women's basketball coach J. Kelley Hall is hoping a little adversity can go a long way.

The Ragin' Cajun women were down by 12 points late in Thursday's first half at North Texas, and rallied for an almost-double-figure Sun Belt Conference win.

"That was good for us, to win one like that on the road and over a conference opponent," Hall said. "We need to do that on a regular basis."

The Cajuns (13-5, 5-2) will get that chance today, but it'll come against much better opposition, and against a Western Kentucky team that's been a genuine thorn in UL's side.
