I want to stay positive for our team, and not be one to criticize, but after watching that game, watching the lead slowly evaporate, watching us only score 2pts in almost 8min stretch in the second half, having four starters play time at 40mins, could the word " substition " enter into the equation ? We have got to get some fresh legs into the mix. Ratliff comes into the game @ 5:38, gets two steals has fresh legs, goes out @ 4:41. Colbert was limping the whole 2nd half, holding her wrist at the same time, she might need more than 2mins to rest when she comes out. This was a big conference game with home court advantage, it's a shame to let that one slip away. I hope we can walk off this punch to the stomach as it was said, and find our half court offense again. We have a awesome team, and could easily be 10 - 2 right now. Let's bounce back Ladies, keep our legs fresh.

  5. UL Basketball Lady Cajuns gave one away

UL women’s basketball coach J. Kelley Hall said it best right after Saturday’s 65-58 overtime home loss to Arkansas State.

“I felt like we gave one away,” Hall said. “We just got tired and couldn’t make a shot.”

The Cajuns were finally playing at home Saturday night, after going on the road for their first 11 games this season. And the UL squad looked road-weary.

Maybe, though, it was that every Cajun starter played at least 37 minutes and four played 40 or more.

UL didn’t have a basket more than five feet from the rim in the game’s final 11 minutes, and the visiting Lady Indians controlled the boards on both ends down the stretch. The Cajuns’ defense, which had given ASU fits to the tune of 21 turnovers in the first 27 minutes, only forced two turnovers in the final nine minutes.

  6. UL Basketball Lady Cajuns Ready to Get Back to Winning

UL's women's basketball team will go back to, as coach J. Kelley Hall said, what got it to here.

Hall said Monday that the Ragin' Cajuns, coming off their first Sun Belt Conference loss of the season Saturday against Arkansas State, will get back to its regular match-up defense that had been the biggest factor in UL's 8-3 record - prior to Sunday's 65-58 overtime loss to the Lady Indians.

"That's our trademark," said Hall, whose squad hosts Texas-Pan American at 7 p.m. Wednesday in a non-conference game prior to a Christmas break. "We couldn't play it against Arkansas State because they shoot it so well."

That defense has helped UL rank among the nation's top five in field goal defense, with opponents shooting only 30.3 percent from the floor. It's easily the best mark in the conference.

  7. UL Basketball Lady Cajuns surge at the end to defeat UTEP

The University of Louisiana's Lady Cajuns stepped out of conference and edged Texas-Pan American 59-53, Wednesday night at Earl K. Long Gym.

The Cajuns used a late 16-0 run to build a 12-point lead and outlast the Lady Broncs.

Trailing by four, Courtney Ratliff brought the Cajuns to within three with a free throw at the 8:36 mark.

Sonora Edwards completed a three-point play, connecting on a free throw after a lay-up to tie the score at 43-43 with 6:49 to play.

A defensive stop led to a Whitney Dunlap jumper, giving the Cajuns their first lead since the 12:20 mark of the second half.

The Cajuns made four consecutive free throws, before Edwards and Dunlap both drained three-pointers from the top of the key giving UL their largest lead of the night at 55-43.

UL hung on to withstand an 8-2 Broncs run and win by six points.

The Cajuns had four players in double figures led by Yolanda Jones who recorded her 21s)t double-double as a Cajun.

Jones finished the game with 14 points and 13 rebounds. She was tie by Onna Charles who also netted 14 points. Charles netted four triples on the night.

Dunlap, who played a career high 40 minutes, dropped 13 points including three triples on the night.

Edwards finished the game with 11 points.

The Cajuns as a team netted nine three pointers, just two shy of their season high 11. All four players in double figures made at least one three pointer. Louisiana finished the game hitting 47-percent from behind the arc.

The Lady Broncs out-shot the Cajuns 51-percent to 40-percent from the floor, but UL’s nine triples helped overcome the shooting deficit.

The Cajuns wasted little time upping their three-point numbers.

In the first half, the Cajuns made six baskets from behind the arc, but only led 31-27 at halftime because of 12 UL turnovers.

Dunlap started the game draining a 25-footer to give the Cajuns a 3-0 advantage just under 30-seconds into the game.

Charles, who made her first three attempts from behind the arc, drained her first triple with the Cajuns trailing 7-5, to give UL a one-point edge.

Her next trey came at the 14-minute mark with the Lady Broncs clinging to a 9-8 advantage. Charles’ basket gave the Ragin’ Cajuns a two point edge, their largest lead since the score was 3-0.

A quick basket by Louisiana and Charles’ third three-pointer of the half gave the Cajuns a 16-9 lead with 11:30 to play.

UL built up an 11 point lead, but were outscored 12-5 in the last seven minutes of the half because of six turnovers which led directly to eight Lady Bronc points.

In the second half, the Texas-Pan American tied the score at 34-34 with 15:01 remaining in the game.

Jones scored the Cajuns next five points, but could not help UL pull away and with 12:20 left to play, Louisiana’s lead was just one point at 39-38.

UTPA took the lead on a pair of free throws by MaHogany Daniel and extended their lead to four with a triple from the right corner – their largest lead of the night.

Trailing 43-39, the Cajuns went on a 16-0 run covering 4:29 to take a 12-point lead.

UTPA cut the lead to eight with two quick baskets, but Edwards drained a long jumper to extend the Ragin’ Cajuns edge back to double digits with 2:40 remaining.

The Lady Broncs cut the UL advantage to as little as seven points, but two free throws by Charles with 17-seconds remaining secured the Cajuns victory.

The Ragin’ Cajuns will return to action on Thursday, Dec. 28, as they resume conference play with a Sun Belt match-up against Arkansas-Little Rock. Tip-off against the Trojans is slated for 3:00 p.m. at Earl K. Long Gym.

I wanted to Congratulate the Lady Cajuns on a hard fought come back last night. Hopefully we can start a home game winning streak and get another conference win this Thursday against Arkansas- Little Rock.

    Go Cajuns.

Amen to that. I was just talking to someone at the Cajundome office today, and I commented how maybe since the men are doing so badly, this will be the impetus many people need to start checking out the women's team and give them the support they deserve. Sad that it's happening that way, but true.

Another thing that's so remarkable about these girls and this team is that I've noticed Coach Hall improve the record and their level of play, EVERY year. That is truly awesome.

Hopefully they'll stay on a roll and we'll be sellin out the Earl by the end of the season.

    God Bless
    Merry Christmas

  10. UL Basketball Lady Cajuns to face outperforming Trojans, Warhawks

UL basketball coach J. Kelley Hall didn't expect his team's first post-Christmas week of Sun Belt Conference play to be this much of a challenge.

After all, Arkansas-Little Rock and UL Monroe were picked fourth and sixth, respectively, in the seven-team West Division in the league's preseason coaches poll.

Instead of struggling, though, UALR and ULM head into the week with a combined 19-6 record, and the Trojans lead the West with a 2-0 record entering Thursday's 3 p.m. contest against the Cajuns at Long Gym.

"They've played really well," Hall said of the Trojans, "and they've already got a road win."

The Cajuns travel to meet ULM's Warhawks two days after the UALR tilt, that game at 4:30 p.m. Saturday as part of a doubleheader that will also feature the UL-ULM men at 7 p.m.

  12. UL Basketball Colbert reports for Lady Cajuns

Jeanenne Colbert wasn't cleared to play for UL's women's basketball team until late Wednesday evening, after a doctor looked at her fractured finger.

Thursday, she single-handedly put the Ragin' Cajuns back into the Sun Belt Conference race.

The senior point guard turned scorer both early and late, and her nine points in the final three minutes helped the Cajuns hang on for a 65-61 victory over Arkansas-Little Rock at Long Gym.

Colbert's three-pointer with 2:39 left gave the Cajuns (10-4, 2-1 Sun Belt) a 56-55 lead and started a streak during which she scored all nine UL points. The last of those came when she stripped standout UALR freshman guard Kim Sitzmann near midcourt and drove for a layup with 59 seconds left for a 62-56 lead.

Just wanted everybody (CAJUN DIE-HARDS) to know, Colbert is playing with a fractured wrist, on her shooting hand (SHE'S A WARRIOR). Is not allowed to practice, just play in the games. WHAT A DIFFERENCE SHE MAKES. Just so everybody out there knew what was going on. NOW IT'S ON TO MONROE.
