OXFORD, Miss. - An early Ole Miss goal was the difference on Sunday as the Ragin' Cajuns soccer team suffered its first defeat of the 2012 season falling to the Rebels 1-0 at UM Soccer Stadium in Oxford, Miss.
"I'm proud of our effort today," head coach Scot Wieland said. "The good thing is that the girls come out of this game knowing they could have won."
Despite being outshot 21-8 in the contest, the Cajuns (2-1) had numerous opportunities to get on the board against Ole Miss (4-0).
"I am very pleased with the improvement of this team every game," Wieland added. "We push the girls to get better every time out and they have shown that they can do that after the first couple games."
The Rebels scored the lone goal of the contest in the 11th minute when Alix Hidal and Olivia Harrison combined to find Rafaella Souza for a one touch goal. The goal was Souza's fourth of the season.
UL applied pressure later in the half forcing UM keeper Kelly McCormick to make two saves before the break. Both Melissa Minton and Shelby Isley contributed shots on goal in the half.
In the second half, the Cajuns best scoring chance came in the 77th minute on an Erin Lynn shot, but McCormick was up to the task keeping the score 1-0 Rebels.
"We had plenty of chances in the second half," Wieland said. "We just didn't get the ball to bounce our way."
The Ragin' Cajuns return to action on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. when they host Conference USA foe Houston the Cajuns Soccer/Track Facility.
