Thread: RaginCajuns.com ... the offline fiasco of 2006-2007

Hopefully they will have the site up and running before the fall sports are over. Even though the volleyball season has been tougher than any of us anticipated it's hard being a "stat hound" like me because I have to go our opponents websites to get complete box scores and play-by-play. I do appreciate the Athletic Network website and all they are doing to keep the line of communication open by posting the articles written by Matt Hebert regarding volleyball.

If at all possible can we get a more definitive idea of when the website will be up and running?

Yes, it's great that they are updating the look of the website. However, it IS quite silly to not update the old site in the interim. You never stop udating the old version while you are building a new version.

But I'm wondering if they are having difficulties accessing the current host, preventing updates.

All they could say was 2-3 weeks. There is a fair amount of stats on the Sun Belt web site. Hope this helps.

Our lack of a website right now was the butt of many media jokes in Houston.

I think that it's great to upgrade the website...
But to offer nothing in the interim [during the time when we need info the most] is just plain stupid.
They didn't think it was a joke when they looked up at the scoreboard at the end did they?

Thanks for your response. 2-3 weeks isn't so bad. I've looked at the stats on the Sunbelt website but they are conference standings and not individual team stats. At least this weekend I'll be able to keep my own stats and see what's up with the team as volleyball will be at UNT and I will be there with my red on!

2 - 3 months is a LONG time ............ the next time we get our alumni letters asking for money, maybe we should check a new box for WEBSITE !!

    Default What's a website?

Yes, I think FAU should and probably will look bad due to their stadium capacity and attendance. I think it will on a national level make the sunbelt look weak. But that to me is something a school handles over time.

My problem is... A national audience. What if we win big and impress people that don't know of us, great. So, people head for our athletic website to learn more about the team and school. What will they find? An apology.

I'm not upset that the school is in the process of making much needed improvements in that area. But why does the old site have to be non operational in the meantime (1) and (2) if we knew this was going to take place could we not have timed it better like say in the summer when there are no sports taking place... oh no that makes tooo much sense lets do it in the middle of a nationally televised game, yeh. I mean, it's not like national television is a big deal to our program and we are on television all the time, Duh.

I love UL and always will, I just feel like we don't get many opportunities to earn respect, and the timing of this website change is definately an opportunity missed. I just hope the site is up for the N.O. Bowl.

    Don't drop the ball.

Yeah, and remember that you are among those that have discovered the information available on this and other message boards. The average fan looks for an athletic dept web page and right now they are not finding one. Poor timing.

I'm at work today keeping my game day tradition of sporting some gear. Since I am at work, I sort of double as an advertisment. Many people have asked why I'm wearing red on Wednesday (I usually go red on Friday) which has prompted a discussion of tonight's game. The discussion ends there, but what if it didn't? An apology about the web page would follow.

I have some experience with website design (work at Golfballs.com), and there is no reason why you cannot keep the old site operational like it was. You make changes and redesign the new site on a different platform and upload the changes in one fell swoop. No excuse.

I just got of off the phone with John Dugas, who is part the of team that will be designing the new RaginCajuns.com site, and here is some of the answers to our questions.

1.) The existing RaginCajun.com site is being hosted, for free for the last 8 years or so, by one of our fans company server.
2.) Due to the success of football the server was not able to handle the number of people logging on to the site. It was actually causing this company problems with emails, etc. shutting down. Because of this problem they were limiting the number of people that can log in at a time.
3.) They are very disappointed about the timing of this problem and are doing everything that they can to remedy it.
4.) Not being able to log on was prohibiting the site from being updated and that is why the AthleticNetwork site is being used temporarily.
5.) The timing of the site problems was not due to the new RaginCajun.com site but due to the added traffic.
6.) UL offered to pay for additional space but was not able to do so.
7.) The new site is scheduled to be up and running by January.

A few thing about the new site. Funding was approved for the new site along with the addition of high speed fiber connectivity. I was told the new site will on par with some of the top athletic sites in the country. It will have live stats and will be updated immediately after the games or complete.

my question would have been after hearing this particular info is why doesnt the university host its own website, not only can they easily afford it but could also rent out excess server space to other websites and help it pay for itself, i saw a guy with a server in his dorm room hosting server space to make a few extra bucks, its not that hard to do, so why are we using someone elses, plus with the universities high speed internet resouces at hand it would easily handle the traffic
