Starting Monday, high school athletes with the potential to play football at UL will get access to a password-protected Web site where they can check out everything about the school and its athletic program as well as communicate with coaches.

It's part of a new recruiting tool designed by Lafayette-based software company Firefly Digital specifically for UL athletics.

UL approached Firefly as it sought to upgrade its recruiting abilities. Many colleges use sophisticated software to aid in recruiting, but UL sought a customized approach that could fit into its recruiting budget.

"A lot of what was out there was for very large university athletic departments with very large budgets," said Douglas Meaux, general manager of business development for Firefly.

The people at Firefly listened to what UL coaches needed and designed the application specifically for the program.

The software package cost $20,000 to set up and maintenance will cost another $1,500 to $2,000 a year.

It allows coaches to track prospective student athletes, monitor their progress, and record everything from vital statistics to their favorite subjects in school.

Troy Wingerter, UL recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach, said it brings the university's recruiting to the next level.
