Nobody gets eight years to build a program, and nobody should be expected to have it completed in two seasons. This is his third recruiting class, has loss multiple players every year, and now there are no more mulligans for him. No coach should need five years to turn a basketball program around. Three years and you should be on the right track, but Marlin for whatever reasons, or excuses is not yet at that point.
As for not being able to command a kid to come here? Well yea, we get that, but then again that is what distinguishes good recruiters from average ones, the ability to take command.
Because this is his third year and is a rekindling for him he is headed towards asking for patience for not three seasons, but four or more. Not a good sign, and no amount of blaming the players, and N Johnson can change that.
Any Success? Eight seasons? I cannot believe you would post something so easily checked out.
Coached at Duke from 1980 to present against some of the best coaches ever at UNC, and others.
1980-81: 17-13 conference 6-8 5th place tied, NIT Quarterfinals. IMO successful at once.
1981-82: 10-17 conference 4-10 tied 6th no post season. Losing record.
1982-83: 11-17 conference 3-11 7th place. Losing record.
1983-84: 24-10 7-7 conference tied for 3rd. NCAA Round of 32.
By year four, two post season invitations from high quality post season tournaments, two winning seasons, and an overall winning record. No problems with student athletes, no glaring problems with assistant coaches.
1984-85: 23-8 conference 8-6 tied for 4th, NCAA round of 32.
1985-86: 37-3 first in conference, NCAA runner up. Sixth season runner up in the NCAA tournament? I guess one could say that almost zero success.
One should not read too much into his comments about Duke's patience with him. He gave them lots of evidence he was getting the job done. In our case the only thing that shows is mediocre recruiting, badly matched assistant coach, problems getting along with the players losing many even after he attempts to keep them. Apples and oranges my friend, apples and oranges.
The only evidence that Marlin can get the job done is his history before he came to UL. Good career as a juco coach, good job at SHSU.
In all fairness Mike Krzyzewski took over a program at Duke that had been to the Elite-8 the year before and in fact 2 of the previous 3 years.
Because of that he got an invite to the NIT with 15 wins.
Because Marlin took over a program with 7 straight losing seasons, his team stayed home with 15 wins.
With the way Marlin's team was playing at the end of year one, I sure would have liked his chances in the NIT.
jmo
Marlin inherited a team that had not won, not a team without talent. In any case I was simply stating the facts, the coach at Duke did not take anything like eight years to start winning.
In Marlins case, to be honest, there are multiple missteps by a senior coach, not a rookie like Lee. The latest is bringing a guy still facing sex charges to the team. COME on that is the first thing you clear up before you offer him an invite. This after multiple years of mistakes by the guy. If you think it is all the players, or N Johnson's fault you have your head in the sand. He is the head coach, that means he makes key decisions about players, and coaches. Multiple mistakes, and then a sex scandal?
