Coushatta Indian pays $250K for store fire

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - Federal prosecutors say an 18-year-old member of the Coushatta Indian Tribe has paid $250,000 in restitution after setting fire to the Coushatta Convenience Store in Elton.

A news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office says Jordan Hawk John of Kinder had been ordered to pay for the fire damage after pleading guilty in January to simple burglary of the store in December 2011.

U.S. Attorney Stephanie Finley said Tuesday her office learned through a subpoena that although John had not paid the restitution ordered by U.S. District Judge Patricia Minaldi, his trust account held hundreds of thousands of dollars. She says he paid on July 16.
