Tuesday night, the Lafayette City-Parish Council approved a list of changes to the SafeLight/SafeSpeed program.
Among those changes, the LCG legal team will soon have the authority to file suit against individuals in an effort to recover unpaid violations.
However, before taking legal action LCG is prepared to offer an olive branch of sorts to those who've racked up fines.
LCG Director of Traffic & Transportation, Tony Tramel told the council his office will soon introduce an ordinance calling for an amnesty period for those who haven't paid fines. If approved by the council, violators would still owe the value of their initial violation, but the late fees would be waved. Tramel tells KATC the late fees are 50% of the intitial violation. So in theory, if someone received a fine of $100, their late fee would be $50.
Tramel expects his office to introduce that amnesty ordinance within the coming month.
