Wouldn't it be a better idea to setup a paypal account or something like that?Its easier and much more feasible for 200 people to donate 10,20,50 bucks than for one person to buy something that costs $1000..IMHO.

That is a very good idea. I would say you could stop by the Cajundome or send your donation by mail, just make sure you specify that you want the donation to go to men's basketball. Great news to see that you guys are helping out the program.
