A former UL police officer who now is a lawyer is the campus' new police chief.
On Monday, Ray Lucas III was appointed to the position, but the appointment awaits the approval of the University of Louisiana System board later this month.
The position had been open since spring 2005, when Gerald Bertinot, a former FBI agent and assistant U.S. attorney, left the post. Bertinot served as chief for two years.
Lucas said the position appealed to his interest in public service and his passion for education. He earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in history from UL and his law degree from LSU in 2001.
