Sometimes it’s the small things. UL had to move some of its football practice fields around prior to the start of the 2006 season, to accommodate the under-construction indoor practice facility. This week, one of those refurbished fields has a new set of goal posts, two of the modern-style single-post goals that bend up to a crossbar and extended uprights. UL’s football program is already well into its second century, a milestone that for the University of Houston is still many years away. But the two teams do share one common historical point, with the Cajuns (then known as the Bulldogs) providing the opposition for the first-ever varsity game played by the Cougars. That contest came on Sept. 21, 1946, at Public School Stadium in Houston, and the team known as Southwestern Louisiana Institute went on the road and took a 13-7 victory. I always interpret probable as "will suck it up and play".
