In 1996 a very good aTm team let a loss to UL ruin their season.

Even if Houston lets this loss ruin their season, make no mistake, they were a VERY good team. For historical purposes I hope they regroup and have a good season, but have no desire to see a rematch in the New Orleans bowl.

Yeah, I hope they rebound and win the CUSA title. They seem to be a really talented ballclub.

  10. UL Football UH Blog: Cougars Lose?

    First Q from the Rob
We're in the closing minutes of the opening period and the Cougars are ahead 7-0 after a 58-yard strike from Kevin Kolb to Jeron Harvey set up a two-yard touchdown run by Jackie Battle.

One early item of note is the embarrassingly small crowd here. Yeah, let the power conferences come calling after the Cougars managed to shoehorn a whopping 15,000 or so fans into Robertson Stadium to watch a 4-1 team play. That's the kind of attendance that will earn the Cougars the attention of the SEC, the Big 12 or whatever.

Another interesting note was the remarkable turn of events in the final minute of the quarter. Anthony Alridge appeared to fumble a pitch, and ULL's Mack Fair scooped the ball up and went 39 yards for a touchdown. Or did he? The Cougars challenged the call on the field, and sure enough it was an incomplete shovel pass, giving UH back the ball. It then took the referees almost 10 minutes to sort out the clock and down markers (it should have been second-and-15 from the 44-yard line, but the down markers had it as a second-and-5). After that lengthy break, the Cougars still didn't have enough time to get things figured out, so they had to call a timeout. Well, it all worked out because when play finally resumed Kolb hit Donnie Avery with a 56-yard touchdown pass for a 14-0 lead.

This is going to be a long night.

    Hafltime
Man, somebody hit the snooze alarm. The Cougars are up 21-10, but it's Dullapalooza here at Robertson Stadium.

Two players have been electric — Kevin Kolb has hit 15 of his 21 passes for 276 yards and a touchdown and Jeron Harvey four catches for 104 yards. But the Cougars' apparent aching need to trickify the offense — not to mention penalties — has meant only three touchdowns.

The Cougars had two scores called back in the final minute of the half, one on an offensive pass interference call against Jeron Harvey and the second a hold called on Jackie Battle negated a 13-yard touchdown pass to Rodney Hannah. And they capped the half by missing a 40-yard field goal by Ben Bell.

The Cougars are running too many end arounds, bubble screens and such. Just throw the ball down the field, and make sure Harvey is at the other end of more than a few of those. Please.

Pathetic. Clean house. Fire the entire squad. You don't lose to ULALA at home. Period.

Briles is responsible for the entire loss. How do you get out-coached in this game? WHEN YOU'RE UP 21-0.

I'm ashamed to be a Coog tonight and probably until basketball starts. I don't see how Briles survives a loss like this.

    Let the meltdown ensue...

All this talk this past week about Big 12 or Southeastern Conference is so pathetic. These conferences would never consider our school. Until we can win consistently in football and bring big crowds and revenue to the table we need to focus on our back yard.

Again Briles is outcoached. The question is how does our athletic department spin this outrage. Another loss in a long list of sorry games. ULALA goes home with a big grin on their faces.

    post
Believe it or not, the Cougars let a three-touchdown lead disappear and wound up losing 31-28 to Louisiana-Lafayette. At home. With Conference USA play approaching. There's no way to spin this one other than to say that the Cougars choked. Period.

The Ragin' Cajuns, behind quarterback Jerry Babb's arm, feet and brain, scored the final 18 points, including the game-winning touchdown with 1:02 to play. They then added a two-point conversion to make sure the Cougars couldn't win with a field goal.

The Cougars now have to hope that this loss doesn't put the team into a funk that turns into a three- or four-game losing streak.

This is what happens when you get big-headed on an opponent. This is what happens when you let down your guard upon going up 21-0 early on...

We have proved we can play with solid teams, but unfortunately we have proved we can choke against much lesser teams...

We need to roll CUSA or this loss could've cost us any gain for the UH program this year.

    we're a joke.

    Posted by: ... at October 7, 2006 10:15 PM
That will be the last game that I attend for the UH football season. The defense was deplorable and a Heisman Trophy winner would not have choked at the end of the game.

Posted by: Lonnie at October 7, 2006 10:45 PM
Bad news: Tough loss. Snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. UH cannot let ULL control the ball for so long in the 2nd half (21 min to 9 min according to the post-game).

Good news: Still undefeated in C-USA?

Best news: Plenty of room on the UH bandwagon but a place should be reserved for Mr. Justice in case he decides he wants to jump on again after the Coogs win C-USA. I mean the guy appears in every media...

Forgot to mention that ULL did come through with some clutch plays they had to have to win (should not be overlooked). A 51-yd FG that could have easily made it from 52 yards, some big 3rd down conversions and a pretty decent catch by the TE in the end zone to take the lead. They got the momentum and rode it to victory.

Posted by: Terry T at October 7, 2006 10:49 PM
Another example of a failure to instill discipline, intensity and desire to win. Pathetic

Posted by: stephen at October 7, 2006 10:52 PM
I think this should be a wake up call for all the people who were buying the hype. Any time a team who has been down for years starts talking about 12-0 and 11-1 seasons this early deserves losses like tonight. Did you people forget this is UH football when you said those things?

One game at a time folks. Don't be cocky. Don't get greedy.

This year's team is best it has been in many years, but it still isn't that great a team.

Posted by: John M at October 7, 2006 10:59 PM
That was tough. I'll always be a Coog through and through but I'm not going to pretend like we can roll through CUSA when we choke like that. I feel really bad for Kolb having to sit on the sideline watching that defense run from ball carriers. I even saw one player storm out through the parking lot, I guess he didn't care to hear what Coach Briles had to say after the game lol.

Oh well, I'm used to it and it was fun while it lasted! But you can't think we can hope to roll over descent teams like UTEP or Tulsa when we choke on the ULALA's of the world. Good game Cajuns! You earned it and flat out showed some heart out there. Heart that we just don't seem to have.

Posted by: CougarKev at October 7, 2006 11:01 PM
Darn you Coogs!!! Now I've got hear that retard cOOGdELUSION spout off at "her" rear-end! That was a pathetic performance. Why does every sports team with "Houston" on it's jersey have to suck when so many are watching? Please win Conference USA so the "delusional madness" can end.

Charlie, your crappy team hasn't done a thing in this league either.

We don't owe the league anything but this sort of loss hurts it. It derails anything we thought we could do (and it keeps me from wasting a lot of money on a lot of roadies).

The ULL people were all class and all a blast. I wish we played them in every sport every year because they're the kind of people we want coming to Houston (and we love going to Lafayette). I hope they realize their first bowl game this year.

Sweet! I also wished we'd play UH more regularly. Being in the same conference would be nice! We've had some good games with them in football, basketball, baseball, etc. It's a good travel game for fans of both schools. I'd expect the two schools to keep playing often, although probably not every year in FB.
