Thread: zone read offense

    Default zone read offense

Everybody knows that UL runs the zone read offense...for anyone who watched the West Virginia - Maryland game last night you were able to see the zone read used to perfection. West Virginia has so much speed that the minute the stuff the box the ball is getting outside with quick screens or options. Ok now getting to my point...watching their speed made me think about our speed and our own zone read offense. I might be wrong but I don't think I am when I say I believe we will have more speed than every team we play the rest of the way besides Houston. With that said I don't see any reason that we won't be able to run the ball the rest of the way.

Also for people worrying about the pass...West Virginia threw the ball 8 times last night for 44 yards. All we have to do is throw to keep teams honest.

That is an UNBELIEVABLE stat! Maybe they ought to convert that QB to a Safety

THAT's the kind of perspective that we ought to keep in mind. That said, Troy's run defense looked pretty stout against F$U.

It is a pretty unbelievable stat but teams respect it. FSU's run game didn't look to hot against Troy but FSU doesn't run a gimmick running game, in which you have to account for more than 1 person per run.

I went back and watched the West Virginia game again and another thing I could interesting was when the commentators were talking about West Virginia's 3-3-5 defense. Rich Rodriguez put it in because he knew that he would not be able to recruit the type of guys to go head to head against the biggest BCS schools such as Georgia in last years sugar bowl so he put in a defense that teams don't see that often. He knew he couldn't go athlete for athlete with the big boys but he knew he could out smart them by using something that they will probably only see once and thats when they play them. Only a hand full of teams run this defense...West Virginia, Tulsa, Akron, and Memphis are the only ones I can think of but they all seem to run it very well.

THe key to the zone read offense is having RBs who are faster than the opponents LBs and Ss... LSU and aTm were too fast on defense... Most of the sunbelt teams have 4.8+ type LBs, while LSU's guys run 4.5-4.6 range.. too fast when you have no passing game to keep them honest...
