LANTANA, Texas - Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns men’s golf team kicked off the 2005-06 golf season at the 2006 Cobb/Ferrell Mean Green Classic, hosted by fellow Sun Belt Conference member North Texas. The Cajuns battled a field of 14 schools and the elements to finish the first round in 11th place. Inclement weather in the area delayed play in the opening round for nearly 90-minutes. The second round was halted due to the weather. Collectively the Cajuns carded a 299 first round score, just 16 strokes behind the tournament leader Washington State. Tournament host North Texas is in a tie for sixth place, just seven strokes ahead of UL. The weather hampered the Ragin’ Cajuns as only one member of the team was able to shoot a score below par. Michael Smith, who led UL in stroke average last year, managed to break par and card an opening round 70 (-2). Smith as consistent, shooting 35 on both the front and back nine. The Ragin’ Cajuns other golfers all struggled on the first nine holes of the day, but rebounded on the back nine. With the exception of Smith, who was consistent on all 18 holes, each of the UL golfers improved their scores on the back nine. Freshman Kyle Pritchard carded a front nine score of 39, but finished the back nine with a 36 to finish three strokes over par with a 75. His score put him in a tie for 33rd. Junior Morgan Landry and freshman Devin Carrey both shot a 40 on the opening nine holes, but lowered their scores to finish out the round. Landry shot a 36, just two shots better than Carrey, to tie for 40th. Carrey’s 78 was good enough for a tie for 61st. Rounding out the scoring for UL was B.C. Thibeaux and Thomas Disch. The duo both carded team high 82s to finish the day in a tie for 71st. The Ragin’ Cajuns will resume second round play at 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning with the final round immediately following. We actually have some really good players on the team. They just aren't putting up good scores in tournaments. They are all relatively young guys with a lot of talent. Look for them to get better as the year goes on.

LAWRENCE, Kan.-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns men’s golf team concluded play on Day One at the Kansas Invitational, and after two rounds, the Cajuns finished the day in seventh place. One of the main reasons for the Cajuns’ success in the first two rounds was freshman Devin Carrey. He posted an opening round 73 to pace the Cajuns. In the second round, Carrey improved his stroke total to shoot a one-under par 71. His two round even par performance ties him for fourth on the overall leaderboard. As a team, the Cajuns posted an opening round score of 306 to finish the round in a tie for 13th place. In the following round, UL rebounded and shot 10 strokes better as a team. It's year two of the "Battle on the Bend," and UL golf coach Bob Bass is hoping for a successful follow-up to last year's inaugural event. But Bass and the organizers for the event, scheduled Saturday-Tuesday at the stunning Cypress Bend Resort on the banks of Toledo Bend, will have to go a long way to improve on the first year. "For a first-time event, it went very well," Bass said of last year's tournament. "We got a lot of complimentary letters back from teams that were there, and the folks at Cypress Bend said they had a lot of people come back after they got a chance to see what was available there." Michael Smith and Kyle Pritchard both tied for 13th to lead the Ragin’ Cajuns. MANY, La.-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns men’s golf team started play at the 2006 Battle on the Bend at the Cypress Bend Golf Club in Many, La. The host Cajuns concluded first round in a tie for fourth place. The Ragin’ Cajuns finished the day just four shots out of the lead behind Texas-San Antonio. The Cajuns had a trio of players who finished in the top-15 of the tournament, with three others placing in the top-25. Michael Smith, Kyle Pritchard and Colin Richwine all tied for 13th. The three Cajuns carded three-over par rounds of 75. Finishing one stroke back was Devin Carrey, B.C. Thibeaux, III, and Mark Brockhurst. The round of 76 was good enough for a tie for 22nd. It's three weeks until Bob Bass opens his 18th spring as coach of UL's golf team, and the Ragin' Cajun squad has six tournaments before it heads to the Sun Belt Conference Championships. But Bass already is thinking about the league tournament, and not just because it gives his team a trip to Disney World. He's thinking about his team doing something that's only been done once in conference history. Only once has a team finished ninth in the league tournament one season and won the title the next, but Bass said his squad has a chance to do that - and he may be right. Two former all-conference players, senior Peter Badawy and junior Justin Lowe, return after absences. Ragin’ Cajuns Golf Finishes Third at Guadalajara Intercollegiate GUADALAJARA, Mexico-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns golf team kicked off the spring season with a third place finish at the Guadalajara Intercollegiate in Guadalajara, Mexico. The Cajuns fell just one-stroke shy of tying Houston and Indiana for first place. The Cajuns used rounds of 308, 290 and 299 for a combined team score of 897, just one stroke off the pace. Junior Morgan Landry paced the Cajuns, finishing in a tie for fifth in the tournament. Landry finished six over par for the tournament. Joining Landry in the top-10 was Justin Lowe. The junior rebounded from an opening round 81 to shoot a three-under par round of 69 on day one. In the final round of the tournament, Lowe carded a 75 to finish just three strokes back of Landry in a tie for 10th. In his first action in over a year, Peter Badawy made an immediate impact for the Cajuns. He was consistent shooting rounds of 75, 74 and 77 respectively. For his efforts, Badawy placed in a tie for 13th. Rounding out the top five for the Cajuns were Devin Carrey and Michael Smith. Carrey finished the tournament in a tie for 23rd after shooting rounds of 76, 74 and 80 respectively. Smith, the Cajuns top performer from the 2005-06 season and the fall, had an uncharacteristic tournament. The junior improved each round, but rounds of 81 and 79 on day one were too much to overcome. He did post the second best round for the Cajuns on day two when he shot a 74. The Ragin’ Cajuns golf team will continue play this fall as they travel to Houston, Texas on Feb. 26-27 to take part in the All-American Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Houston. UL's golf team, having finished as runners-up by one stroke in the season-opening Guadalajara Invitational last week, will make its second appearance of the spring season today and Tuesday in the University of Houston's All-American Intercollegiate tournament. The Cajun squad will be part of an 11-team field for the tournament, which includes 18 holes today and a final 18-hole round Tuesday over the 7,220-yard par-72 Tradition Course at Cypress Wood. UL finished eighth in a 13-team field in last year's All-American meet, but had its best tournament finish in more than a year last weekend in finishing one stroke behind at the spring-opening event in Guadalajara, Mexico. LOUISIANA La. - Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns finished the first day of the 21st Annual Louisiana Classics Golf Tournament with a third place finish. The Cajuns were fifth after the first round of play, but jumped two spots after a solid showing in round two. The Cajuns shot an opening round of 289 at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette. The one-over par score was good enough for fifth place after the morning session. In the afternoon, the Cajuns shot an eight-under par round of 280 as a team to jump two spots into third place. The Cajuns are seven shots behind the leader Southeastern Louisiana, who finished the day at 14-under par. One shot ahead of UL was Lamar who carded a team score of 568 after the first two rounds. Individually, the Cajuns were led by Devin Carrey. He shot an opening round of par, but improved his game in the second round. During the afternoon round, Carrey carded a six-under par 66 to move into a tie for fourth place. Carrey was one of four Ragin’ Cajuns players to shoot under par on the day. Morgan Landry started the day with a three-under par round of 69. He finished the day with a second round score of 73 to finish in a tie for 13th. Michael Smith, who finished in a tie for 15th, opened the tournament with a one-under par round of 71. Smith finished the day one-under par as he played the second round even. The fourth Cajuns player to card a sub-par round was Justin Lowe. The junior opened the day with a round of 77, but rebounded in the second half of the day. Lowe turned in a scorecard of two-under par to finish the day in a tie for 38th. Rounding out the scoring for the Cajuns was Peter Badawy. After shooting a team-high round of 78, the senior carded a second round score of 72. Two Ragin’ Cajuns players participated in the tournament as individuals. B.C. Thibeaux carded rounds of 73 and 75 to finish day one in a tie for 47th. Kyle Pritchard was the other Cajun to compete. He shot an opening round of 80 before carding a second round score of 75. Devin Carrey had been waiting for Monday for a long time - ever since he joined UL's golf team this year. The Ragin' Cajuns had been waiting for a round like Monday afternoon, and because of that, the hosts are in striking position heading into the final day of the Louisiana Class-ics tournament at Oakbourne Country Club. Buoyed by the stellar six-under-par score of Carrey, the Cajuns posted an eight-under-par 280 score in Monday's second round and finished the day with a seven-under 569 score. UL is in third place in the 15-team field and is seven strokes back of front-running Southeastern Louisiana. LAREDO, Texas - One of the oldest and most tradition-rich collegiate golf tournaments in the Southwest opens play today, with the UL squad in the field for the annual Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club. The Cajuns are part of a 15team field that includes nationally ninth-ranked Lamar and eight other teams that played in last year's NCAA regionals. The field also boasts 10 of last year's top 11 Border Olympics finishers, including defending champion Baylor. That group of top finishers from last year doesn't include the UL squad, which had one of its most disappointing outings of the 2006 season in last year's Border meet. Morgan Landry shot one-under par in the first two rounds to pace the Cajuns and finish the day in sole possession of second place. BOSSIER CITY, La.-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns golf team carded a one-under par second round score as a team to jump from third place to first place at the Hal Sutton Intercollegiate on Monday at the Golf Club of Stonebridge. The Cajuns carded a first round team score of 297 to conclude the opening round in third place. UL’s afternoon round improved by 10 strokes to allow the Cajuns to leap-frog into first place after the first day of competition. The Ragin’ Cajuns are looking to defend their 2006 Hal Sutton Intercollegiate title. Morgan Landry shaved seven strokes off of his first round score to card a four-under par 68 in the final round of the day. His one-under par efforts for the day landed the junior in second place, just five strokes behind Birmingham Southern’s Robert Lindstrom. Just two strokes back in a tie for fifth place was the Cajuns’ Michael Smith. The junior carded a one-over par round of 73 and an even-par round of 72 to finish the day at 145 and in a three-way tie for fifth place. Justin Lowe and Mark Brockhurst were two shots back of Smith in a tie for 10th place. Lowe rebounded from an opening round of 77 to shoot two-under par in the afternoon session and turn in a scorecard of 70. Brockhurst, who was competing in the event as an individual, shot an opening round of 71 and then added a 76 for a first day total of 147. Devin Carrey finished the day at five-over par. He shot 72 in the morning session and dropped five strokes to card an afternoon round of 77 to finish in a tie for 19th on the day. Rounding out the scoring for the Cajuns were Peter Badawy and Thomas Disch. Badawy carded rounds of 77 and 78 to finish in a tie for 37th, while Brockhurst turned in back-to-back scorecards of 81 to finish in a tie for 53rd while competing as an individual. The Ragin’ Cajuns will look to hold on to their three-stroke lead and claim their second straight Hal Sutton Intercollegiate title on Tuesday. BOSSIER CITY - UL's golf team came within a shot of defending its team title, but the Ragin' Cajuns lost in a playoff for top honors Tuesday in the Hal Sutton Intercollegiate tournament at the Golf Course at StoneBridge. The Cajuns tied with La. Tech for the team title at 15-over-par 879, and the Bulldogs won a team playoff on the first hole. UL had won the Hal Sutton title in the 2006 spring season for its only victory on the 2005-06 schedule. "We just counted a couple of numbers that we couldn't afford to count today," said UL coach Bob Bass. "We should have won it outright, but you get yourself into a playoff like that and anything can happen." UL shot two-under as a five-man team on the playoff hole, the 398-yard par-four first hole, but Tech followed with a three-under score as a team to claim the title. JONESBORO, Ark.-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns golf team shot a combined seven under par to finish in third place at the Arkansas State Indian Classic at Sage Meadows Golf Club in Jonesboro, Ark. The Cajuns finished just five strokes behind tournament champion South Florida. The third place finish marked the fourth time this season the Cajuns have finished in the top-five as a team. The Ragin’ Cajuns had four golfers finish the tournament at even par or lower. Michael Smith led the Cajuns with a fifth place finish. His final round of 69 gave the junior a four under par score of 212 for the tournament. The tie for fifth was the fourth time this season that Smith has finished a tournament in the top-5. Two strokes behind Smith was Justin Lowe. The junior tied for 11th carding a final round of 71. Lowe finished the tournament at two-under par. He had two rounds of 71 sandwiched around an even par round of 72. Devin Carrey finished the tournament at one under par. Starting the day at one under par, Carrey shot even par in the final round to finish the tournament in a tie for 15th. Morgan Landry finished the tournament at even par.
