UL's golf team had its final competitive round before next week's Sun Belt Conference Championships on Tuesday, and Ragin' Cajun coach Bob Bass liked what he saw. The Cajuns posted the day's low round on the final day of Arkansas State's Indian Classic and vaulted into a third-place final finish in the 16-team field. UL finished behind winning South Florida and runner-up New Orleans, but made up two strokes on USF and six on UNO during Tuesday's final round. The Cajuns had a four-under 284 team score over the 6,903-yard par-72 Sage Meadows course in Jonesboro, Ark., one of only two subpar rounds on the final day. USF had a two-under 286 Tuesday to finish at 12-under 852 for the tournament, with UNO second at 854 and the Cajuns third at seven-under 857. The next-closest teams were Troy at 862 and La. Tech at even-par 864. "The best thing about that is today was the toughest of the days we've had," Bass said. "It was cold and windy and the pins were probably in their toughest spots of the week. With all that, we had good, consistent play. "We've been trying to put a good finishing day on things all spring, and we really got it done today." UL's golf team heads to the Sun Belt Conference Championships Monday with high hopes. The Ragin' Cajuns had similar hopes last season, having finished ahead of its league partners most of the season before falling apart and finishing ninth out of 10 teams in the Sun Belt meet. "We're a lot better prepared this time," said Cajun coach Bob Bass, whose team has finished tied for first and in third place in its last two tournaments. "We said all year that we'd been waiting to have good final rounds and finish off tournaments, and we've done that over the last two weeks." This year's 12-team men's field - UL Monroe and Florida Atlantic join the fray as all-sports members of the league for the first time - begins play Monday at Disney World's Magnolia course in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. ORLANDO, Fla.-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns men’s golf team opened the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament with a third place finish. The Cajuns had all-five players finish the day in the top 25 with three players tied for 11th. The Cajuns collected a team score of 297, just 12 strokes behind the first round leader New Orleans. UL is currently tied with Denver and the pair is just one stroke behind North Texas who is currently in second place. Individually, the Cajuns did very well in their first round. Justin Lowe, Morgan Landry and Peter Badawy all tied for 11th turning in scorecards of two-over par each. Lowe carded a team low front nine of 36. He followed that up with a two-over par back nine of 38. Badawy was consistent carding a score of 37 on both the front and the back nine. Landry opened the day with a front nine score of 39, but rebounded in the back nine to card a 35. Devin Carrey finished just one stroke behind the Cajuns’ leaders. UL's golf team fought rugged conditions on the first day of the Sun Belt Conference Championships Monday, and the Cajuns stand tied for third heading into today's second round at Walt Disney World's Magnolia Course in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The Cajuns carded a nine-over 297 score, getting balanced scoring with three 74's and one 75 in its counting rounds as one of the first teams out, and head coach Bob Bass thought that score might put his squad near the lead. That was before New Orleans blazed in with a three-under 285 team score in the late groups, groups that didn't have to fight as much of the cold and wind as the early starters. "We had a really good round considering the conditions," Bass said. "We played solid in some serious wind. It was probably a three-club wind on some of the par-threes." ORLANDO, Fla.-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns golf team trimmed seven strokes off of New Orleans’ lead to finish the second round of the Sun Belt Conference Golf Tournament in second place. The Cajuns were led by senior Peter Badawy, who carded a second round score of three-under par to tie for first place. The Cajuns began the day in a tie for third place with Denver—12 strokes behind the leader UNO and just one stroke behind North Texas. The Cajuns shot a second round team score of 290. The two-over par team score combined with a Privateers round of nine-over par helped UL improve to second place and cut into the UNO lead. Individually, the Cajuns were led by Badawy who carded a three-under par 69 in his second round. His second round score of 69 was a season low, topping his previous best of 71 in the second-round of the Border Olympics. After his second round, Badawy was one of just two players under par. ORLANDO, Fla.-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns golf team needed more than 18 holes on the final day to claim their first Sun Belt Conference Golf Championship in 10 years. The Cajuns edged Middle Tennessee in a playoff to claim the 2007 SBC Tournament. The win marks the third Sun Belt Conference title for the Cajuns. The Cajuns also won the Sun Belt in 1993 and 1997. In the 10 years since the Cajuns have won their last championship, UL has finished either second or third five times. “I can’t tell you how happy I am to win,” head coach Bob Bass commented on his team’s first conference championship since 1997. “It has been almost 10 years since my last victory and we have been close for a couple of years coming in second by one stroke just two years ago. “This bunch of guys has been working hard to get better and get tougher,” Bass added. “It has paid off for them and I couldn’t be happier.” The Cajuns opened the tournament in a tie for third place with Denver. After the first round, UL saw themselves trailing the leader New Orleans by 12 strokes after carding a team score of 297. The Ragin’ Cajuns trimmed the UNO lead to just five strokes after a second round team score of 290. UL’s second round effort lifted the Cajuns into sole possession of second place. The Cajuns lowered their team score eight more strokes on the final round to card 282 as a team. The six-under par score combined with a round of even par for the Privateers lifted the Cajuns over UNO on the leaderboard. UL's golf team was the picture of frustration two years ago when the Ragin' Cajuns had the Sun Belt Conference title pulled from under their spikes by a late South Ala-bama charge. Michael Smith remembered the feeling of that one-stroke loss well when he stood over an eight-foot birdie putt during a sudden-death playoff for the league title Wednesday. "When we lost by one my freshman year, it hurt a lot," Smith said. Smith made sure he and his teammates wouldn't feel that way again, rolling in a birdie on the par-four playoff hole Wednesday. That putt, and clinching par putts by Peter Badawy and Justin Lowe, gave the Cajuns their first Sun Belt title since 1997 with a playoff vicory over Middle Tennessee at the Walt Disney World's Magnolia course in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. ORLANDO – Denver’s women and Louisiana-Lafayette’s men picked up the championship trophies at the 2007 Sun Belt Conference Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships on Wednesday afternoon. The Pioneer women shot a three round total of 829 (+29) to take the women’s crown. The team fired a 297 on Wednesday to keep runner-up Florida International at bay, who shot a tournament best 293. FIU finished +42 over and was led by Maria Hernandez who finished in third with a 223, seven-over par. Freshman Stephanie Sherlock was the individual winner of the women’s tournament, shooting three-over par (219) to earn an All-Conference automatic selection. Sherlock was also named the Freshman of the Year. Teammates Emily Hoeper (+6, 222) and Katie Kempter (+8, 224) also joined Sherlock on the All-Conference team. All three Pioneers finished in the top five at the tournament. The men’s race was much closer and came down to a two-team playoff between ULL and Middle Tennessee. Last year’s tournament came down to a three-team playoff with WKU prevailing. Both teams started on the one hole and that is where it would finish. ULL made a birdie putt to give them the 2007 team title. The Ragin’ Cajuns were led by Peter Badawy who finished in second place after shooting a third round 69. Badawy finished four-under par for the tournament. The rest of the story
