TROY, Ala. – Entering Thursday’s match the Ragin’ Cajuns soccer team was tied for eighth place in the Sun Belt Conference standings with Troy. As the result of an overtime goal, the Trojans won the match and took sole possession of eighth place.
The Cajuns (7-10-1, 1-6-1 SBC) were outshot 22-17 in the match by Troy (7-9-2, 2-5-1 SBC). The Trojans also held a 7-4 edge in corners.
UL had multiple scoring opportunities, but were unable to get a ball past Troy’s keeper Katie Comeno-Lewos. The squad’s best chance came in the second half when freshman forward Elizabeth Manuel launched a shot from 15-yards out, forcing Comeno-Lewis to make a diving save.
After playing 90 minutes of scoreless action and getting 14 shots off in regulation, the Cajuns had to play in their third overtime match of the season.
Offensively, Manuel led the Cajuns with six shots. Senior goalkeeper Amanda Moorefield had seven saves, hiking her career saves total to 306. Moorefield has moved into UL’s all-time leader in career saves, surpassing Stephanie Weston’s previous record of 257.
Troy’s Maddie Tieken scored in the 108th minute after breaking away from the defense to notch her third goal of the season and giving the Trojans a 1-0 victory.
The Cajuns return to action on Sunday, hosting South Alabama for a 1 p.m. Sun Belt match at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.
In the six years before coming to UL Scot Wieland had three undefeated seasons at Belmont Abbey College, but for some reason he has never been able to put it together here.
1 win in the SBC is unacceptable. His teams always play great defense but seem to have problems scoring.
I don't know soccer so I have no idea where the problem sits?
