Public Forum to Discuss Possible Smoking Ban

In Lafayette tonight a forum to discuss the pros and cons of a local smoking ban in Lafayette Parish Bars.

City Parish Councilman Kenneth Boudreaux is hosting the meeting in the Lafayette Consolidated Government Auditorium tonight at 5:30.

Boudreaux is not proposing a ban on smoking rather he wants to hear both sides of the issue from the public. For several months residents and the Let's Be Totally Clear Campaign has pushed the council to ban smoking in bars citing the health effects of second hand smoke.

In published reports, Boudreaux says in March he announced a special city-parish recognition for any bar owners who voluntarily chose to go smoke free, but he said no one has came forward beyond those who had already chosen to ban smoking. State law bans smoking in most businesses, but there is an exception for bars and gambling establishments.

The only local ban on smoking in bars is in Alexandria, but Natchotiches is considering a similar ban.
