In my senior year, we finished 14th in Outdoor NC's; our top performers were: Lon Badeaux-PV, Winston Sinclair-400M/400H, Ndaba-TJ. These guys skyrocketed our national performance, but in conference, we did rack up points in the javelin with 5 guys hitting at or over 200, 1 scholarship shot/discus guy with a couple of football guys including Anthony Clement. If great high school relations are kept and smart management is done you can find a number of walk-on guys to compete in the throws which can elevate conference standing--which would help the UL program--and there are qualified people that will coach part time in the aforementioned areas if they are sought--it is a matter of what people are content with and what they are willing to work for....Lancon was never scared to work, that's for sure.

  2. Track & Field Louisiana Classics Track Meet TODAY

The Louisiana Classics annually provides UL's track and field team with a chance to perform on its home track and in front of hometown fans.

This year, though, being at home means even more to a large contingent of the Cajuns, many of whom will be in home meet competition for the first time in their careers.

"We've got one of the biggest squads we've ever had," said Cajun track coach Lance Veazey, "and a lot of them are freshmen. They've never competed out here on this track, so it'll be an experience for them."

Veazey is hoping it's a good experience when the Cajuns welcome most of the state teams for the meet, which gets underway at 7 p.m. today with competition in the men's and women's 10,000-meter events.

The bulk of the meet is Saturday at Cajun Track, with field events beginning at 11 a.m. and running events beginning at noon.

Teams scheduled to take part include Northwestern State, La. Tech, UL Monroe, Grambling, McNeese State, Southern, Southeastern La. and Nicholls State along with Albion (Mich.) College.

  9. Track & Field Lee jumps to victory at La. Classics

Toni Lee turned in the best weekend so far in this UL track season Saturday at the Cajuns' own Louisiana Classics meet.

Lee swept to victories in both the long jump and triple jump in women's competition and followed with a fifth-place performance in the 100-meter. That effort was easily the highlight of the Cajuns' lone regular-season home meet this spring, one held in spring-like conditions.

"The weather was fine," Lee said. "The wind was never too heavy."

Lee won the long jump with a 19-4 effort, holding off Southern's Monica Robinson (19-2 1/2), and came back for a 38-8 effort in winning the triple jump.

"I was hoping to beat my 19-6 of last weekend," Lee said. "I was hoping for a 19-8, or even 20 feet. In the triple jump, I went 39-1 last week and was trying to do better than that."

Our track and field program is an embarrassment and, regardless of what event we might have won, the Louisiana Classics meet was pitiful. In reference to most events, the only reason we were competitive in some was because the schools competing were by no means power houses. If you look at the times run and the distances thrown or jumped, they are far from impressive.

For several years, I was heavily involved in the Track and Field Association. Looking back I realize that we have now dropped to high school level. What a shame.
