  1. Track & Field UL Hosting Sun Belt Track & Field Championships TODAY

LOUISIANA La. - The University of Louisiana will once again host the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, beginning on Friday, May 11 at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Complex.

In addition, Cajuns baseball will also host their final home series against Arkansas-Little Rock this weekend. All baseball alumni are invited to watch the Cajuns take on the Trojans. A senior day ceremony, honoring the Cajuns eight seniors, will be held 20 minutes prior to first pitch on Sunday.

Parking on the west side of Cajun Field will be limited, due to baseball, track and the car show. Fans are asked to park on the east side of Cajun Field (Cajundome side). A shuttle service will transport fans to the baseball game on Friday, May 11, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, May 12, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Friday’s admission to the SBC track meet is free. Field events held outside of the Track/Soccer Complex, discus and hammer, are free. Admission inside the Track/Soccer Complex will begin at noon on Saturday and Sunday. Ticket prices are: $8.00 for adults, $5.00 for children ages 3-12, and free for Sun Belt students with a school ID.

Decathlon and heptathlon combined events are set for 9:30 a.m. on Friday, followed by the men’s and women’s 10,000 meter run at 9:00 p.m.

  2. Track & Field UL's Arceneaux hopes to shine at conference

If he was fully healthy, Justin Arceneaux might be the man to watch in the sprint events this weekend at the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

He might be one to watch, anyway, bad back and all.

"I'll have to wait and see how I feel," said the Northside High product. "It hurts a lot, but I'm going to bear through it."

When his back doesn't flare up, Arceneaux's one of the leaders of a Cajun squad that's hoping to spring at least a couple of surprises when competition begins today at Cajun Track. He's one of two qualifiers from the men's squad for the NCAA Regional meet later this month, having posted a 10.49 time in the 100-meter dash.

  3. Track & Field UL plays host to Sun Belt track and field championships

Over 60 NCAA Regional qualifiers, one NCAA champion and a couple of current world leaders will be in action this weekend when UL's Cajun Track hosts the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Action begins today with first-day competition in the decathlon and heptathlon, along with finals in the men's and women's discus and the men's and women's 10,000-meter runs. The multi-events begin at 9:30 and 10 a.m. respectively, with the discus events at 2 and 4:30 p.m. and the 10,000-meter events beginning in the cooler evening hours at 9 p.m.

Several field events and running event preliminaries are set for Saturday, with the majority of the finals scheduled Sunday.

Ten men's teams and 11 women's teams will make up the league contingent, with Florida International predicted to claim the women's team title and South Alabama the pick in the men's meet. They will look to dethrone reigning men's champion Middle Tennessee and women's titlist Western Kentucky, who took those crowns last year at Cajun Track.

LOUISIANA - Sophomore Kayla Vice placed first in the women’s pole vault in Day 2 of the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, earning 10 points for the UL women, putting them into eighth place.

Vice recorded a season best height of 3.65 meters (11-11.75) to qualify for the NCAA Regional Meet. She earned 10 points with her win to help put the Cajuns into a current eighth place position. This marked the first Sun Belt individual championship for the Lafayette native.

Also earning points for the UL women were Toni Lee and Kioloni Readeaux in the long jump, and Casey Brown in the 3000 meter steeplechase.

  5. Track & Field 5 more Ragin' Cajuns Qualify for NCAA Regional meet

LOUISIANA La. - Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns captured several awards and qualified for the NCAA Regional Meet in the men’s 110 meter hurdles and the 4X100 meter relay in Sunday’s portion of the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Kyle Ward qualified for the NCAA Regional Meet after placing second in the men’s 110 meter hurdles. Ward’s time of 14.07 seconds easily surpassed that regional qualifying time of 14.30 seconds, earning him eight points for the UL men. Ward is the fourth individual Cajun to qualify for the regional meet.

The UL men’s 4X100 meter relay time, composed of Justin Arceneaux, Chreston Anderson, Roderick Houston and Jason Chery, placed third and earned six points for the Cajuns. The team’s time of 40.62 seconds qualified it for the NCAA Regional Meet. This is the first UL relay event to qualify.

New jumps coach seems to WHAT? Nobody to the finals in the long; nobody clears opening height in the high; no [men] vaulters; one guy gets FIFTH in the triple and you think the new jumps coach has it together? The modestly good performance by the women jumpers is directly attributable to the OLD jumps coach, who left to keep from starving to death.

Not sure I disagree about needing new direction, but the only area that the Cajuns performed anywhere near their tradition on the men's side was in short sprints and hurdles, which happen to be coached by the guy you desparately want to get rid of.

I have no idea what you THINK you know about UL track. But I can tell you with absolutely no doubt that the problem is MONEY. We don't have to pay a lot, but we should have a jumps coach, a throws coach and a distance coach [assuming that the current head coach, who is a sprints and hurdles coach stays] each making what we pay the head coach, and the head coach should get twice what he does.

By the way, if you think you can get Boo Schexnaider over here to coach, forget it. He just left lsu&a&mc@br to double his money as a private coach for world class jumpers.

WHo said anything about a LSU'er. No need to go that puky route. The new jumps coach is the only one who has a clue in the crowd for motivating people. At least her peeple knew what hey were competing in two days before the meet. And she had two jumpers place in case you missed it.

Money? Lascon had money casue he raised it. Robe has money cause he raised it. Lotoef has money casue she raised it. Bass has money casue he raised it. Tennis has money casue they raised it. Where's the money that used to be rasied by Lascon? Answer: Still in the pockets of Lascons boosters drawing 5 years interest casue no one has left their office to ask for it? its part of all non football and basketball coaching jobs at ul.

Go ahead blame it on money. Blame it more on far deeper problems than money. (CLUE: go to webster's and look up clueless)

    See reuslts of that below.

2007 averages of men and women scores. This gives the same sordid picture of where ul track is since the Lascon recruits left. Tape measures, watches and discipline issues don't lie.

Until you fix the total lack of a throws coach, which can only be addressed by University Money, not booster money, you are p*ssing into the wind. Throwers we used to routinely get here are now going to Northwestern, Nicholls, SLU and McNeese, NOT because we don't recruit them, but because they KNOW we have no one to coach them when they get here, and all those schools have decent to outstanding throws coaches.

I don't know the new jumps coach. Well, I know her, but don't know anything about her as a coach. I do know that the women who scored were good enought to score before she got here, so I'm not giving her credit for developing them, though I will give her credit for keeping them motivated.

None of the other programs you mentioned are paying assistants with booster money. That money goes to travel and equipment.

Oh, and if you expect me to believe you are knowlegable about UL track, at least spell Coach Lancon's name right.

  10. Track & Field Re: 5 more Ragin' Cajuns Qualify for NCAA Regional meet

I have to say as a current UL track athlete, we did better competing this year at conference. We may have gotten last AGAIN but we did have some people qualify for regionals, which we are very proud of. We scored more points than last year and I know that is not good enough but we did try. We want to do better and I think we improved. Maybe not to some peoples standards but we improved on individual standards. We improved on our own abilities and we also improved our interaction with each other as a team. To be honest, we were a TEAM this year. We cheered each other on and ACTED as a TEAM and that was something that we wanted to change and honestly something that we needed. WE as a TEAM accomplished that. In the past years, we haven't smiled at conference but this year there were many smiles. We were so happy for each other and what we all had accomplished. Coming out last did not make us smile but in the end, it really did not matter b/c we were a team for once. We may have come out last but we came out first within each other and excelled at our own personal standards.

We have had a lot of people on our team who have struggled and fallen, but they got back up and fought. For instance, we had a guy run the 10,000 who has been dealing with a stress fracture in his foot for a while now and he pushed it in conference to do well. That is heart! Also, on the sprinter side we had Stacy Fuller who came down with a hamstring injury during the season and GOT BACK UP and qualified for Regionals. He is an amazing athlete with great potential and he will do very well in his college career. He is an inspiration to our team. Also on the sprinter side is Jamie Blue who has dealt with many injuries. She is pretty much the most stubborn but has much heart in what she does. She has been dealing with an injured foot due to multiple stress fractures for the past 3 months. That injury did not stop her because throughout the last 3 months she has improved her time. She ran the 400m in conference but during the race her foot gave out but she finished the race. That is heart! She was supposed to anchor the 4x4 too and usually she is the alternate that steps up for the team when something goes wrong. She is always there and willing. That is heart! Kayla Vice, on the other hand, won conference in the pole vault. She has overcome a torn ACL and a sprained ankle and this is all in 2 years. When she messed up her ankle last year, there was a chance she wasn't going to be able to pole vault ever again. Well, she proved that wrong and came back strong and healthy for conference and unbelievably won! Her heart is so big and her goal was to win. She overcame everything and accomplished what she wanted. A gold medal! Luke Moody, after struggling from his injury last year, decreased his time every meet and finished out his last outdoor season like he wanted. He has dealt with a lot and he has GOTTEN UP. He has one of the biggest hearts on our team. He has not missed one practice and by that shows. That’s heart! Roderick Houston, he has a hamstring problem and has been dealing with it for some time. He ran is butt off in the 4x1 relay and he played a huge role in the reason why they are going to regionals. He always said they were going to regionals and he was confident in doing so. He still has the injury too. I can keep going but we ALL have heart.

Of all the things that are posted on this site, they have made us stronger as a team. We appreciate that people care so much about our program and we hope you continue to do so. Until next year, we hope we can make our fans happier. This is only the beginning!

It is probably not a good plan for you and/or your teammates to read the boards. Most folks that post here either don't care or they don't have a clue about what goes into being successful in track at the D1 level. Most think it's like high school where you show up in January or February to train for the Conference Meet in May.

Most others don't realize what limited access the UL track teams have to the strength and conditioning programs that are vital to your success. Very few know that essentially all coaches except Lance are volunteers, or very poorly paid part-time employees. They don't even know that there has effectively been NO throws coach since Coach Lancon died.

They also don't know how important the throws and jumps have been to our success in the past; and can't understand why we aren't scoring 140 points in the conference meet. Those missing 50+ points in the throws, 30+ in the jumps and 12+ in the Decathlon are invisible to them. They have no clue that on the running side, we were just about as successful in the conference meet as we typically were with Coach Lancon.

I like your attitude, and the news that the track athletes are back to being a team!! With some financial support and recruitment of good prospects perhaps we can be back to the days of yore.
