Everyone rips on the Pepper, but I rarely hear decent alternatives. One of the problems with our colorful Cajuns mascot is that it is difficult to capture what "Cajun" is in a way that lends itself to a mascot. One thing is certain though, what we have tried so far hasn't worked. Back in the early '80's we had a woman in a crawfish suit. That sucked. And Mr. Cajun followed, and that wasn't much better. And I know some people liked the chicken, but where is the Cajun in that? I have heard about a gator, but that tired old thing has been done. I would be interested in hearing something that is really workable and representative.

How about no more life-size mascots at any athletic event. Just recruit more Ragin Jazz.

I am actually OK with that. I also don't have a problem with using the pepper concept, but the pepper costume just doesn't work. I also wouldn;t have a problem with going back to a bulldog, because it represents our history and is a part of our tradition. We can still be the Cajuns and sport a bulldog on the field. (Not sure how well that would work with the new artificial surface though. I don't want to be in charge of cleaning up after "Drillbit the Ragin Cajun Mascot"). My recollection of UL was that we had some of the most amazingly beautiful females in existance on our campus. No question we could swell the ranks of the Ragin' Jazz.

The mascot does not need to be related to Cajuns. We want ot be the University of Louisiana and it needs to be related to Louisiana. The state bird the pelican, the state dog the catahoula hound, or the state reptile the gator. I would take the pelican, we already have a WWII example of a Ragin Cajun military group with a pelican delivering a bomb to the enemy.

The gator does nothing for me. The hounds are part and parcel of being Louisiana and/or Cajun.

I also agree with getting rid of that font on the uniforms. Go with something that does not look like a western musical from the forties.

It isn't that I don't like the gator, it is only that it has already been done. Same with the pelican. We just arrived too late for those two. I like the Cajuns name because it is ours alone.

We are associated with the BullGator whether we like it or not, everything else on the table is artificial. A visitor to Campus Prime has to exercise a large amount of self control to leave without a picture of one.

As far as Cajun is concerned, it is not going anywhere this issue is not related. With your comment I sense a feeling of worry that UL will become known as “the mascot” well at UL it is really a spirit leader not a mascot. Except for the short 45 years that UL was known solely as the Bulldogs (English) no other mascot became the identity. Any future creation should be viewed solely as a spirit leader.

  12. UL Football Re: Alumni Retail Focus Group

Spirit leader indeed, I agree as there can be no Ragin' Cajun mascot. I view it like the Army mule, and the Navy goat for their teams. Sorry but I just will never accept the gator, or what you all bull gator. Gators are just nasty creatures, reptiles.

True TooLame has used the pelican, but does not promote it and does not own it. EllisWho has the tiger one of the most used mascots but I think their use of a living spirit leader cements them as THE TIGERS as opposed to the rest.

I am just not going with The Swamp and Gators. Now you do seem to be copying UF. We had the original Swamp and am not giving that up, but let them have the gators by themselves.

I know you are partial to gators, but really not a good mascot or spirit leader for UL.
