  1. UL Football Johnson helps fuel Cajun comeback efforts

    Advertisers-Bruce Brown

LAFAYETTE - Chester Johnson might have made the biggest play of the season for Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns.

Two weeks ago against Idaho, the Cajuns had clawed their way back from a 21-7 deficit and trailed the Vandals 28-23 in the fourth quarter.

The defense had stopped Idaho on downs and forced a punt, but the Cajuns set up on their own 13-yard line as the game clock neared the 5-minute mark.

They needed something to jump-start them, and freshman running back Johnson provided it with a 37-yard dash to midfield.

The Cajuns went on to an 87-yard, 14-play march that was capped by senior Jerome Coleman's 3-yard touchdown run in a 31-28 triumph.

UL Football Meet the Cajuns: Terryl Fenton and Chester Johnson

Kemisha Ware - The Vermilion Sports Editor

    Terryl Fenton
UL fans said goodbye to 23 seniors this weekend, but according to Cajun senior Ivan Taylor, the Cajuns are “rebuilding,” and with players like Terryl Fenton and Chester Johnson, the future looks bright for the team.

“We are still rebuilding, but I see progress everyday,” said Taylor. “Our young guys are coming up and making big plays.”

Fenton, a freshman cornerback from New Orleans, stepped up for the Cajuns in UL’s homecoming game against Idaho when he returned Vandal quarterback Brian Lindgren’s interception 44 yards.

“I think it was a big play,” said Taylor. “He’s a good cornerback. Watch out for him.”

Johnson, a freshman running back from Shreveport, said Fenton has good timing.

“It seems like he is always there,” said Johnson. “I don’t know if that’s coaching or if that’s him, but he is always in the right spot at the right time.”

Johnson, also has made an impact this season with impressive carries, including a 37 yarder to mid-field against Idaho, which was the longest run play of the season.

Johnson, a product of Evangel Christian Academy, said he credits his family for his success.

“My dad is always encouraging and pushing me to work hard, even when I’m being lazy,” said Johnson. “He’s like my best friend, pushing me to work hard.”

Johnson said his family is one of the reasons why his chose to attend UL.

“Me, my dad and my brother, we’re so close. I wanted to be close to them,” said Johnson. “They could come see me play whenever they want to, and I can go home whenever I want to.”

Despite his success so far this season, Fenton said he did not expect to make an immediate impact with the Cajuns.

“I was hoping I could,” said Fenton. “I came in and contributed to the team a little bit, but I didn’t get to do as much as I wanted to.”

Taylor said, in time, Fenton will improve as an athlete

“I think he will be a fine cornerback from this school,” said Taylor. “Hopefully, he will do big things.”

As for Johnson, Taylor said “he’s getting more confident.”

“In couple of years, I hope I can come back and maybe see him rush for 1,000,” said Taylor.

Fenton said Johnson came into the season prepared.

“Chester came in during the summer and worked hard,” said Fenton. “All of the freshmen that are stepping up now worked hard all summer.”

Johnny Felders and Bill Sampy are two other Cajun newcomers making their marks on the team.

“Bill Sampy has contributed to the team on offense,” said Fenton.

“Bill was a red shirt last year, but he has come in this year and is doing real good,” added Johnson.

Fenton, who compiled 69 total tackles during his senior season at Holy Cross, said he strives to become a better player.

“My vision, as far as reading the receiver, is really good,” said Fenton. “I want to improve on my footwork, experience and speed to be where I know I can make it to the next level.”

Johnson, who was a member of Evangel’s 2001 5A State Championship team, said he wants the Cajuns to have a “winning season.”

“I have to improve on my speed and blocking, but I think i’m coachable,” said Johnson. “I want the team to be Sun Belt Champions and I wouldn’t mind being Sun Belt Offensive player of the year.”

I look for a good battle for the starting RB job in the spring, right now Johnson has to have the edge.

    UL 1984, 1999 . . . .

I love the cannon (even though I have not heard it) and wish it had been there for the UNT game. Hopefully the frat guys will come back and help fill the stadium, hey why not make all pledges attend games as part of getting in to the frat or sorority? Never was a member of one so I do not know how it works.

I think it is the start to something good for the program. It will take time to build on things from the past which people will remember. But I think it is a great start.

  6. UL Football Geaux Cajuns (against Arkansas)

Coach Bustle’s football squad is on a two game winning streak, and has clinched a winning record at home. They have a remote chance of closing out the season 5-0.

I honestly don't expect a win against Arkansas, but I promise you the Cajuns are not the same team that went scoreless against North Texas and LSU.

I say that knowing full well that Arkansas has had two straight shut outs, but mark this down. "They will not shut out the Cajuns."

Rekeita reminds me a bit of Jake Delhomme. He is not near as fiery but the team beleives in him. They know he won't quit.

Not in my wildest dreams would I have expected a 7 point game. It was actually closer than that.

The long pass that was dropped at the 10 and a few other plays on defense . . .it was an awesome game.

Louisiana was 7 points short in the first half and played heads up in the second.

Any recruit would be proud to play for coach Bustle.

Between this game and the two before it, we are starting to see what we can and will do in the coming years. I hope the team can end the season and send these seniors out on a high note next week with a win over ULM.

Some have said on other forums: "Eric had nothing to do with the defense."

Before I begin let me say Jon VanCleave making it to the NFL would bring the best long-term results to Louisiana's football program.

However I disagree with the quote above. The type of offense that Eric ran kept the defense rested and on an even keel. There were fewer 3 and outs giving the defense a chance to get in a groove, which they did for the last 2.25 games.

Having said this I think JVC has a better chance of making it as a NFL QB since there he would most certainly be behind a normal (By NFL standards) offensive line. That is all JVC needs to thrive. This would bring benefits for years to come. Whereas I don't think the NFL would give or take Eric as serious in that roll.

I love both quarterbacks and they both bring unique attributes to the position.

I think a convincing win over ULM is VERY important. The late season rally will carry over to next year. A loss vs ULM takes away from the fine performance vs Arkansas.

actually I should have said "...takes away from the fine performance vs Arkansas in the eyes of some." I don't think anyone that has been following the Cajuns season closely will think that this was a fluke.
