    UL Football Great report

"The guys definitely do not have the look of a 1-6 team. Coach Bustle and the staff seem to have them focused on the game at hand."

    Great news!!!!!!

These guys really need a win to reward all their hard work.

Default United Louisiana Cajuns- Halftime, Workday, et al.

    Several things.

    1) All of you who worked to help spruce up the football stadium, the University is going to recognize us at halftime this Saturday.

    Green is a no-no.
Listen for the announcement for us to go down by the field before halftime, or just head down there as the 2nd quarter winds down.

    2) Gerald needs about 10 or so people to work for a couple of hours Sunday, removing the chain link fences around Cajun Field. He hopes to have the brick entrance gates up by IU, or ASU at the latest.

We will meet out there at 10:00AM, bring pliers, wrenches, etc.

    3) We will tailgate, as always, by the Eauque (oak) this Saturday. Drop by. I know that some of you have your own traditional tailgating areas. You might consider in the future moving out along the fence. If there is a lot of activity along Bertand and Congress, it will pique the interest of people who drive by on gameday.

    See you Saturday!

Seeing Autrey's work ethic in practice leaves no question as to why he is so good in games.

you can,t be serious! autry doesn,t hardly do anything in practice. he may kick 10-15 punts a practice which is not a very good work ethic. go to other schools practices and you will see what real kickers and punters have to do at practice. one hour of kicking, thirty minutes of ball handling drills, thirty miutes of mental drills, forty-five minutes of running drills and thirty minutes of special team drills. you say he is so good in the games. when i saw him punt i knew he was weak. in the first three games he he kicked the ball short and then would get a good roll. i knew it would just be a matter of time before teams would see tapes and start putting their punt returners up closer. since then he has dropped from #11 to #62 and has gone from a 44.7 to a 40.2 avg.

Well I must admit I am not a punting guru.

However what I have noticed on the part of Grant is a tireless devotion to his practicing what I call "the drop".

I attribute the slip from his early average to his being asked to kick every ball out of bounds agaisnt LSU. In fact I was impressed with his 35.2-yard average against LSU. When you consider 12 kicks no shanks after Davis had that first great return. I thought his directional abilities were very good.

Since the all time best D1 NCAA average is 46.3, I am not ready to call his 40.2 average that you mention a poor average.

Then again if you say he has no work ethic, then who am I to argue. I certainly am no punting expert.

    Turbine,
Autrey is 4th in the SBC in Punting with an avg of 40.1 per kick. UI punter Ryan Downes is 1st with and avg kick of 42.0, since Autrey is seperated from the conference leader by less than 2 yards a kick, I would say he is not doing too bad.

I didn't say his average is bad. I do think his average is misleading in that his punting at beginning of the season was mostly short line drives that the punt returners chose not to field the ball therfore he got allot of yardage on rolls. If he was so good he would not have had to punt the ball out of bounds in the lsu game. A good college punter can hang a 40-42 yd. Punt 4.2 to 4.6 seconds. If he does that lsu doesn't run the ball back. I would consider a 27,29,30 and 33yd. Punt a shank even if your punting toward the sideline. You need to know that most of the punters that rank in the top 30 have to pooch punt 30-35% of the time and still maintain a high avg. Since our offense isn't too good it is very rare for grant to have to pooch punt so he gets to kick away almost every time. I did say his work ethic was bad. At other college programs kickers and punters work as hard as all the other players not stand on the sideline doing drop drills. Drop drills are part of the equation but there is so much more to it than just that. His operation time is 2.0 to 2.2 thats bad. 1.2 to 1.5 is the norm. Good thing ul has a great deep snapper. I wish him all the luck in the world.
