Well, we're in the middle of a reversal of fortune. Our defense is looking really good, but our offense has been anemic.

The only teams that have been able to score a decent number of points on us were Alabama (22 in first quarter, and 7 near the end as a gift from our offense) and Kentucky.

Even the mighty UT-Knoxville was only able to score 17 points on our defense (the rest were scored by UTK's defense and special teams).

I sure hope that last night's win over the Vanderbilt Commode Doors instilled some confidence in the offense.

  9. Default Brothers didn't get chance to compete

    Advertisers-Dan McDonald
LAFAYETTE - Rob Christophel's been in the collegiate football coaching profession for 19 years.

Rick Christophel has been coaching collegiately for 27 seasons.

The two brothers had never coached against each other, and after Saturday they still haven't - but only due to a technicality.

Rob, the offensive coordinator for Louisiana, had been planning to face off with Rick ever since he joined the Ragin' Cajun staff in December and saw the UAB game on the schedule.

Rick had been on the Blazer staff since 1995, the last two as defensive coordinator, meaning that the two were going to match wits.

That was before former athletic director Herman Frazier left the staff during the summer, head football coach Watson Brown took over a dual role as head coach-AD, and Rick bowed out of active coaching to take the post of senior associate athletic director.

"It was actually a lot of relief," Rob said prior to Saturday's game of not calling plays against his brother's defense. "It would have been mentally tough."

Instead of coaching, Rick now spends his days with administrative duties, running the day-to-day operation of the UAB program.

"I've been in more meetings in three months than I had in 27 years of coaching," said Rick, who was in the UAB coaching box during the game. "I go from one meeting to the next. It still feels a little weird. People always ask me what's going on at practice, and I never go ... I don't have time."

The relationship between the brothers goes back to the late 70's, when Rick was an assistant coach at Austin Peay and Rob was the quarterback.

"I had to pull him out a couple of times," Rick laughed. "He didn't know the difference in cover 2 and cover 3."

"I told him it was just bad coaching," Rob responded.
