Thread: This Super Regional is ridiculous

Yes, we were underseeded. As a previous poster mentioned, Farmer could be acting politically correct when commenting on the fairness of our seed. However, sometimes things are just such crap that you should speak up no matter what. And if Farmer believes that we were worthy of a 14 seed instead of higher, then shame on him.

And yes, it's difficult to maintain hope. But. a.) South Al was no slouch in their regional. b.) look at all our regular season accomplishments c.) look at how we tore through our regional. The caveat is d.) if we win the super regional, they will have to notice not only based on our merits that have gone above and beyond the call of duty to demonstrate how worthy we are of a higher seed and higher respect, but also based on how ____ed arizona st. will be that they had to play us, and how ____ed the WCWS' other 7 participants will be when they have to face us.

Ladies and gents, we can win this super regional. I have no doubt. I fully expect us to. And honestly, it gives me more satisfaction that we have to go the tough road we do. We will say at the end of the playoffs, when we are hoisting up the NC trophy, that no one, NO ONE, gave it to us. We earned it. We took it, nay, we wrestled it from, nay, we RIPPED IT FROM THEIR DIRTY MONEY GRUBBIN' NONSENSICAL HANDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YEAHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *rips shirt apart and roars in an adrenaline infested rage*

    it's gonna be good y'all

I'm going to take a lot of heat for this, but I heard Farmer's rationale for his comments, and it's hard to disagree.

One big thing the committee looked at was "very bad losses" - losses to teams outside of the top 99 RPI. We had four of them. Many teams had none.

We had 4 wins against top 25 rpi teams. Some teams had many.

From a selection committee member's point of view, that actually made sense.

With that said, I wouldn't be thrilled to go to Cal or Alabama or somewhere like that. Would I rather play Hofstra? Well sure. But that's not how it works.

And all things considered, I think UL is VERY comfortable going to play a team we beat 9-2 earlier in the season. I don't think ASU is ecstatic for their "reward" for a great season - a date with the Cajuns.

It's going to be fun this Thursday and Friday. I really think these games won't even be close. I'll probably be surprised, but I guess we'll see.

I haven't followed with baited breath.. but I thought we ended up seeded right where brian had our RPI?

I agree we can win it, and I expect to win it. The truth is I wanted to watch our team in Lafayette. This also means we will have to beat more elite teams than others had we been properly seeded. That certainly means nothing if you look at it as you might in a game.

In a game if you are the home team and the game is tied, you feel real good if you shut down the visitor in the top of the tenth, because you now have six outs to score vs their three, but that all goes out the window if they score with two outs. When we beat that ASU team it will be very similar to being on the road and scoring with two outs, the team goes in the spot that is being projected for the no. three seed, and we already took care of them.

I don't think South AL was outside the top 99. I don't think FIU was out of the top 99 either. They lost 0 out of conference games. They were 17-1 against the NCAA field. They lost only 4 games all to conference teams. The three of the losses were where the other team had 3 chances to win one game. ASU lost to McNeese. Farmer is an apologist and has the backbone of an invertebrate. He would not stick up for his athletic programs against the big boys unless one of us had his testicles in a vise. (If he has any)

Yesterday I heard something that really upset me. Farmer, according to Jay Walker, felt we were properly seeded. Some of the criteria, ie excuses used, were lack of numerous games against the elite programs, and one bad loss. Yes we had one bad loss, and that loss to ULM whose UPI ended up 131, and ASU had a loss against McNeese who ended up 108. Not a lot of wiggle room there. So checking out TAMU and they have a loss against no. 98 New Mexico. Now 108 and 98 are better than 131 but not much. As you move into those numbers the percentage difference drops a lot.
Whether or not Scott truly believes the Cajuns were seeded correctly, I think he is certainly toeing the company line.

The "bad loss" criteria seems to be an excuse to justify the seeding. In fact, I think it is nonsense. Conisder the following ...

#7 seed Tennesse lost to #202 Winthrop (16-39 record) at a neutral site.
#8 seed Texas A&M lost to #121 Iowa State. They also lost to #96 Pacific and #98 New Mexico.
#9 seed Missouri lost to #155 Eastern Kentucky at a neutral site and #122 Murray State at home. With an RPI rank of #14, that is being rewarded.
#10 Georgia lost to #93 NC State.
#11 Oregon lost to #98 New Mexico.
#13 Arizona lost to #107 New Mexico State.

Also, as you mentioned, #3 Arizona State lost to #109 McNeese State.

As for games against Top 25 competition ... I think wins are more important. The committee also must realize that it is impossible for non-elite programs to schedule large numbers of these games. They might as well tell schools that are not in the elite conferences that you will never be able to obtain a Top 8 seed.

Louisiana had (4) wins vs. the RPI Top 25. Tennessee had just three more wins... (7) ... but it took them 14 tries to earn those (7) wins. The Cajuns needed four games to win four.

#8 Texas A&M was 9-9 vs. the RPI Top 25. Some #1 seeds had losing records ... #11 Oregon was 11-12, #13 Arizona was 11-15, #12 UCLA was 10-16, and #10 Georgia was 6-8. We saw what happened to Texas A&M and UCLA. #9 Missouri and #6 Texas were both 9-8.

Please tell me how Georgia with an RPI ranking of 15 and a 6-8 record vs. the RPI Top 25 gets a #10 seed and the Cajuns earn a #14 seed? Is it because the Bulldogs played (14) games vs. the RPI Top 25 ... even though they won only (6)? I am sorry, but simply scheduling these games does not earn you a top seed. Performance matters. Winning matters.

Texas A&M earning a #8 seed with a #8 RPI ... with 16 losses ... is testament to how broken the system truly is ... starting with the RPI as implemented by NCAA Softball.

Really, ASU should be more ____ed about this than we are. Imagine being a #3 and having to play a team of our caliber in the Super Regionals. Their play throughout the season probably earned them an easier road than that.

Thanks for putting together the numbers. I sure missed some this morning as I was in a hurry and looking only at a couple of schools.

It is all BS. I told Jay they, the committee, would use whatever numbers they needed to justify their bad decisions. He got pretty PO'd at me for saying that. Your numbers continue to justify my sniff test, as well as the objective test.

I agree with everything up until biology class started.

Farmer had no say-so in where the Cajuns were slotted.
