Wrong Way Driver Witness Speaks Out

As that 18-wheeler barrelled across the Basin Bridge, it was involved in three hit and run crashes along the way. Luckily, just minor injuries in those crashes and State Police say the driver of the rig drove some 25-miles, the entire length of the Basin Bridge going west on the eastbound side.

The driver of the 18 wheeler was arrested for DWI, reckless driving, and three counts of hit and run.
I spoke with one man who like so many other drivers had the scare of his life.

"There is no shoulder on the Atchafalya Basin Bridge and I just got over as far as I could."

Glenn Mallet is a big rig driver who dodged a major bullet as that 18-wheeler traveling the wrong way almost hit him.

"He did catch the back end of the trailer in front of us."

That crash, just one of three that 62 year old Marshall Smith is accused of causing.

Many people on Facebook sharing their close call as well, including Byron Williams who was traveling with his family. He says, "I didn't have time to merge over or time to slow down to get behind the eighteen wheeler to my right. I gunned my truck as fast as I could and made it with no room to spare. None! There was no way we would have survived this collision."
