  1. UL Baseball ROUX: UL Preferred Walkon Dane Maxwell's team American Legion World Series Champs

Led by tournament MVP Dane Maxwell, Nationwide was undefeated at the five-day tournament, outscoring opponents 57-16 and outhitting them 59-27.

At the tournament, Maxwell pitched eight innings, giving up four hits in a 7-0 victory over Tupelo, Miss., on Sunday. At the plate, he was even more impressive, going 13-for-21 in five games.

"They were just throwing me pitches I could hit, and I wasn't trying to do too much," he said. "This is unbelievable. Going to the World Series is a dream come true."

Maxwell, a Louisiana-Lafayette signee, capped his regional performance with a 3-for-3 effort against Enid. But it was teammate Brett Palermo, batting ninth, who provided the big offensive lift for Nationwide in the final.

  2. Default Metairie's survivors win ALWS title

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The American Legion team from Metairie, La. survived Hurricane Katrina last year and, on a lesser scale, survived losing the first game of the 2006 Legion World Series here Friday night.

Now they're the kings of the world.

The survivors from Louisiana pushed across three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning last night and topped Terre Haute, Ind., 6-4, in the championship game of the World Series before 1,733 fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Matt Brown, who was still buzzing fastballs at 90 mph late in the game, pitched a complete game to help Metairie claim the first World Series title in team history.

Metairie lost to Terre Haute in the opening round of the tournament Friday night and had to come back through the losers bracket to claim the title with a pair of victories over Terre Haute the last two days of the Series.

"We lost the first game of this tournament, but it was never out of sight for us," said Brown, a sophomore at Calhoun Junior College in Decatur, Ala. "We knew it could happen. And as you can see, we're going home with a nice trophy.

"I'm going back to Decatur as world champs. You can't beat that."

All of the players for Metairie have attended Archbishop Rummel High School in Metairie. Brown graduated in 2005 with Kevin Weidenbacher, another key member of the team, but all the other guys on the team played for Archbishop Rummel this season.

Terre Haute took a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth inning on a rocket home run by Nick Ciolli, but Metairie responded with three runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead for good on consecutive RBI singles by Weidenbacher, Dane Maxwell and Brett Palermo.
