By the end of the week, tens of thousands of plants will be planted to help protect the coast. The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana has been working for years to preserve marshes, swamps and the Louisiana coastline. The coalition and nearly 50 volunteers are in Christian Marsh just west of Vermillion Bay, planting what's called smooth cord grass along man-made terraces to prevent more land from washing away. Every hour Louisiana losses one football field of land from erosion. Enthusiastic about saving the wetlands, volunteer Terri Antholzner traveled from New Orleans.
"It's so exciting to just be out here and just think about helping the wetlands after Katrina and Rita and everything," said Antholzner.
By the end of the week they will have planted 40,000 plants. Not only stabilizing the land, but producing new habitats for a birds and aquatic wildlife.
"It,s really sad when hurricanes come through and ruin the lands and the animals that live here," said volunteer Whitney Ashford. "So we're just here to help the community to do our best to do our part."
