At Wednesday's St. Landry Parish Council meeting, the council gave the parish attorney authority to consult with any relevant agencies about alleged financial misconduct by parish employees. One such case of alleged wrong-doing stems from a new hangar at the St. Landry Parish Airport, which was built during the past year. According to the parish council, the hangar was approved and constructed without proper approval and budgeting. The parish auditor is also investigating the case and is expected to issue a report next month.
Current Parish President Bill Fontenot, who took office earlier this year said he welcomes any investigation.
The council also discussed a number of amendments to Fontenot's $12.5-million budget for the current fiscal year. Fontenot submitted the budget back in January, but a budget has yet to be put in place. Without a budget in place, the home-rule charter allows the parish to run on budgeted figures from the previous fiscal year.
Amendments to Fontenot's budget are expected to be discussed at an upcoming public forum, before coming back to the council for any action. Fontenot says the parish will likely be without a budget for the current fiscal year for at least another month.
