Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns endured their second scrimmage of camp on Saturday morning. The team worked almost exclusively on the running game, with most of the scrimmage devoted to series on the defenses side of the field.
The heat index topped out at 99 degrees, which was significantly less that than Wednesday’s 111 degrees.
The Cajuns ran on 70 percent of their offensive plays (54 of the 77). The team totaled 205 rushing yards and three touchdowns, led by Tyrell Fenroy who ran for 61 yards on 12 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns.
Deon Wallace had 48 yards on six carries, giving the redshirt freshman a team-high total of 111 yards on 11 carries in both scrimmages.
Twelve different players attempted a rush.
The offense was able to break seven runs for 10 yards or more, but the defense held the ground attack to two yards or less on 24 attempts.
“There were some good plays on both sides,” said head coach Rickey Bustle. “The guys gave a great effort and showed some enthusiasm.”
UL threw for only 81 yards on 11 completions. There was not a single deep ball thrown, as the longest completion was only 12 yards.
Kyle Ward was credited with an interception after he picked Connor Morel to stop a drive at the 11-yard line.
“We had situations that we wanted to cover,” explained Bustle. “We were able to work on goal line, red zone and end zone and try to reach the goals that we have for those situations.
“We wanted this scrimmage to be more physical. We didn’t throw the ball much by design today.”
True freshman kicker Tyler Albrecht drilled a 41-yard field goal on the final play of the scrimmage under intense pressure from his teammates.
“Tyler made a big kick at the end,” stated Bustle. “There was a lot of yelling and we tried to put it in a game situation. I wanted to add pressure.”
The team will practice on Sunday at 4:00pm to finish fall camp. The players have Monday off to get acclimated on their first day of school. The Cajuns will then enjoy a normal week of afternoon practice before officially starting game week preparations next Sunday.
