Cajuns focus on rushing, short passing in scrimmage
The goal was to emphasize the running game and the short passing game, and that's what the University of Louisiana football squad did in its second full-scale scrimmage of fall camp Saturday.
The Cajuns, two weeks away from their Sept. 2 season opener at LSU, ran the ball 54 times Saturday and only threw it 22 during the one-hour, 45-minute session at Cajun Field. Even those 22 throws were mostly possession-type attempts, with 11 completions accounting for 81 yards.
"That was definitely by design," said quarterback Jerry Babb, who finished up 4-of-6 for 22 yards passing. "We wanted to see how the offensive line and our running backs would react to it, and we had some pretty good pops."
The Cajuns ran 76 plays and five scrimmage kicks during the session, not including kicking periods that preceded each half, and accounted for 300 offensive yards of which 219 came on the ground. That total included a pair of goal-line series at the end of the first half when running back Tyrell Fenroy and fullback Chancellor Roberson each bulled in for touchdowns.
"When we had goal line, that was huge," Babb said. "We have to be able to come away with points there."
